I have no experience with the modern version, but I have my Grandpa's original, which is a fun piece to have! I even have the box, and the receipt from Hess' in Allentown for $9.95
What is it you want to know? The 1983 reissue in Pennsylvania is mechanically identical to the original, just the body and detail colors are different. The 2 later versions have a trailing instruction car with a rear coupler has a siren and engine sound and has F-N-R capabilities. ( New York Central and Lionelville fire dept.)
A Union Pacific version was cataloged but never made.
Canadian Pacific #18411 was also produced. It is original "bumper reverse" style.

These two cannot be run without the instruction car unless they are modified.
I picked up one without the instruction car. I added a collector and wired it to run forward. It was a simple change, the fire cars still have their postwar style motors.
I think Lionel also re-ran the original version, in the PWC version.

Correct, though the bumper stripes may be yellow instead of white as shown in the pic. I can check when I get home.

is $52.00 a fair price for a postwar?

Seems low for a nice postwar one.
If you are buying, check the window muttons. For some reason, they are often damaged on this piece.
