Hi, All;

For a few years, I've had a 5405 small Hudson. It's 6-28007.

I can find hardly any information on it. At first, I thought it was a K-Line adaptation, but the K-line literature says their 5405 has fan-driven smoke; mine has the old style flapper can puffing smoke.

Specifically, I'd like to know more about where it fits in overall with the Hudson line. It appears larger than an 646/2046 (but I don't have one to compare), and runs just great. Yet I never see anyone discuss them or have issues with them, etc.

Archive search really didn't turn up much, although one post noted it was a part of a NYC freight set.

Thanks for any additional information you might share;

This form of the Hudson first appeared around 1998/1999. The engine tooling is somewhat based on the 646/2046, there was a recent discussion of this updated tooling in this thread:

The engine was sold by itself for $499 (1999 Classic Volume 1 catalog) or in the 21977 set. The 21977 set is unusual in that it contains just one boxcar and one piece of rolling stock from the Lionel Visitor Center.  But the set did include the CAB-1 remote and command base for just $50 more. The catalog photo incorrectly shows the loco as 5406.

OK; still a bit confused.

I got to thinking about my Hudson when RRS posted his thread referenced by Ed above.

HOWEVER, in that post, RRS noted 5406 as being 6-28007, but mine is 5405.

Ed also posted a catalog page showing the set that the loco could be obtained from, but the engine in that catalog is labelled 5406.

Was there both a 5406 and 5405? I noticed the catalog said it was available either as SantaFe or NYC, but the image in the catalog showed NYC as 5406. Mine is 5405, but NYC.  BUT:  could I have ended up with an NYC tender and SF engine? Bought mine online used, but it was in the box.

I just got to thinking about this, because it seems that no one talks about this engine.

Thanks for the info thus far;

Carl - Here is what happened with these Hudsons/Pacifics.  They originally debuted in the 1999 Preview catalog in SignalSounds/non TMCC versions. 4 Pacific locos, and 3 Hudsons, as item numbers 180xx.  The C & NW Hudson would later appear in 1999 Classic Vol 1.  Then in 1999 Classic Vol 1, the TMCC versions were added, most being 280xx item numbers.

In the 1999 Classic Volume 1 catalog, all of the TMCC versions are advertised with a different road number than the non TMCC versions, but they were not made that way.  Turns out for all the locos, both the TMCC and non TMCC versions share the same road number but different Lionel item numbers. Even more confusing the C&NW which was originally advertised as either road number 3005/3006, was made as 2698.  Lesson learned, the final product may vary from the original catalog descriptions.  Looking at the 1999 Classic 1 catalog, the Pacifics are shown with solid driving wheels, where as they were made with open wheels like the Hudsons.

Attached photo is from the 1999 Classic 1 catalog.

Hope this info clears things up.
