I've personally been debating getting one of these engines for cheap for conversions and upgrades, or look for the MTH Premier counterparts...

I have this engine. If you are looking for a motor/electronic conversion project with no exterior details, this is perfect. However, if you are looking for perfection right out of the box, then go Premier.

I do have fond old memories from youth of the original Lionel Mohawk in terms of looks, and I agree that the RailSounds still sound great today.

I’m almost sure converting the locomotive from the motor, smoke unit, and chuff board would still cost less than buying a new Proto2/3 counterpart, but I do think MTH did a much better job on the detailing and I love their recorded 5 chime whistle.

Mark Have you had any issues with the smoke unit on yours?Mine stops and starts when it feels like it.Nick

As I recall, a lot of the problems with this loco were caused by a TMCC board set that left the motor starved for power.  Eventually Lionel issued or recommended replacement boards.  And as with many of  the '90s Pullmor-motored engines, some break-in running and lubrication are required.  Mechanically it was almost identical to the 1990-issue L-3, which itself was an improved version of the 1989 Reading T-1 (18006.)

Mr HARMONY wow you have sparked my interest in the MTH smoke unit.As you know this Locomotive has the old "puffer" style unit.I don't like these .Mine barley works and is extremely tempermental.I operate in command and constant full voltage and puffer smoke units running off track power don't seem to be a good combination form my experience.(not sure how this one is wired)

Can you provide me with some information on what smoke unit to order?Does it run off track power?Etc. Etc.?I use this Locomotive to pull my NYC Heavy weight passenger cars.It's perfect for that.Thanks in advance for your help.Nick

Yes, I changed the packing material an replaced with a 27ohm resistor and it smokes great now.

Replacement Boards are/were available from Lionel.

No issues with mine, and I bought it sealed last year and still run it.

Just prior to me converting a Mowhawk tender (18064) to a Chessie Steam Special (18011) Aux tender, The power supply had a melt down and fried one of the power transistors. I have since pulled out all of the internals from the tender and installed an EX Commander. If anyone wants the internals, please send me an email and make me a reasonable offer. The power supply is not the original to the tender. It had been replaced at some point prior to me purchasing it. But I believe everything else is original.
