Anyone have this engine? I remember when it came out, it suffered from either a bad mother board or Railsounds 2.5 board or something, and many were sent back to Lionel. Any one remember what was actually wrong then? How does this engine run?

I had one and it ran well but I traded it towards another more recent Lionel steamer like the USRA 0-8-0 or the New Haven 4-8-2. Odd-d
Lionel actually had a recall for this engine to address the board issues. When you find one, ask the owner if it went back to lionel for the new boards. The ultimate test is of course if it runs well . Check before you buy would be my advice.
The boards are still available from Lionel. I just didnt know if it was the Railsounds Board or the Mother Board. I still see alot of mint/ sealed ones for sale..
The board in question is the 610-8064-256 ACDR Circuit Board and Housing Assembly.
A parts diagram for 18064 is available from the Lionel website: download Supplement 43. My 18064 was a very poor runner until I replaced this board.

I have one in which the circuit board was swapped out before I purchased it. It is just an OK runner but the whistle is absolutely haunting. It looks great as well.
I have 18064 and while it's not your 4-chuff-per-rev, can-motored, sophisticated engine, it is fine with me. Make sure you thoroughly lube the Mohawk and she should be fine. No, she's not going to pull 50 cars, but looks dern fine pulling the semi-scale freight issued during the Kughn era.
Mine went back to Lionel 3 times for a variety of electronic problems. They offered to buy the loco back and I took them up on it.
I have a MINT 18064 still in the original box and shrink wrap. I am thinking of selling it. Aside from shipping, does Lionel charge to repair the boards? What is the cost/benefit to fix it if I am going to sell it.
Revising the last post, there is a repair receipt in the bottom of the box stating that the item was upgraded with new circuit board, repaired as needed, tested good. I'm all set.
One final question, is the 18045 TMCC equipped? The box says it is "command equipped." Is that the same as TMCC? An eBay listing describes the item as not being cammand equipped even the box says it is.
Yes, that has tmcc. I had the mohawk and it was a great engine.
