I have recently ventured outside of pre and post war Lionel when I acquired an 8206 locomotive and tender with electronic sound steam and whistle.  The steam sound works fine so I know the circuit board is getting power and the speaker works.  I can't get the whistle to work.  I have tried with brand new 8251-50 and 6-5906 controllers.  The wirnig diagram showing how to wire the controller into the circuit leaves lots to be desired.  Where might I find a more detailed WD?  Also if the whistle control portion of the circuit board is shot, can new circuit boards be purchased?  If so, anyone know where?

Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.

The 8206 was one of the very few MPC era steam engines that had a whistle in addition to the Mighty Sound of Steam, prior to 1980.  Some early 8142's, and the 8305 only from the Milwaukee Special also came with the whistle.

A combination of the whistle not harmonizing well with the MSOS, and a faulty controller lead to the whistles being pulled until reworked in 1980 with the Chessie Berk.

My point being that if the tender was switched out at any point, it may not have the electronic whistle.

For my 8206, Traditional Trains in New Hyde Park (Long Island) rebuilt the sound board,  it works great (including the whistle) and no longer requires the tether.  It works so well that I bought a junker 8206, had that tenders board rebuilt and I use it with my 8600.
