More tips:

Visit all the buildings.  York is 4 football fields of trains.

Give some thought to your wants so if you see them you can buy them.

Locomotives with a good mechanism but a not so good (or  no) shell are hardish to find.  I've bought shells and spent time looking for mechanisms at an acceptable price.

Two "must stop" booths in the Orange Hall: the TCA Deaccession Table and the LCCA Table.

Pay with exact change when reasonable. . .the seller will appreciate it.

Some travel and hotel related tips:

Buy or bring a case of bottled water.  It'll keep you hydrated.  Add powdered drink mixes - the kind you add to 16 ounces of water - and you'll have cheap beverages.

Eat at the food trucks outside the Orange Hall.  Good food.

You can have good continental breakfast with good cookies, Maple Donuts, and tea made in your room microwave (breakfast buffet doesn't have water that's hot enough for tea).

Breakfast buffet can be very good or very bad (been there).  Coffee is always drinkable and juice is acceptable.

Make time for Strasburg/RR Museum of PA/Choo Choo Barn/TCA Museum.

The East Broad Top Railroad (EBT) is 1/2 hour north of Breezewood on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.  Breezewood is around 3 hours west of York.  EBT is worth a visit if you're coming from the west.

With time zone changes you lose time going east and gain time going west.  Driving from Chicago to Breezewood - for example - is pushing it for a single driver.  Driving from Breezewood to Chicago is reasonable, however.  Leave at 6:30 AM ET and arrive in Chicago at 3 PM CT.

Lots of good tips above.  I would add that you should prepare for any kind of weather -- it can even vary wildly from one day to the next.

Also, I second the comfortable shoes tip.  A few meets ago, I counted the number of tables at the meet and estimated that there were over 2400 tables of stuff for sale.  One York, before I was a table holder, I wore a pedometer and logged 10 miles on a Thursday!  York is good exercise!

Greg,

I guess if you get hammered at QSL on Thursday night, will you forget your morning coffee on your car roof?
I cancelled my La Quinta room yesterday and you might have gotten it. There is a slight up charge there securing my ex-room!
We are staying at Candlewood Suites on the east side of York. 1 bedroom suite with kitchen for $149 a night. Going out on Thursday am and staying till Saturday early afternoon.
I will see you sometime at York.
Ted (almost without his coffee left on the car roof) !!

Too funny Ted!  So the Quaker Steak and Lube after-party is now at Candlewood Suites - Got it!

Ted, Candlewood Suites is a very nice hotel, comfortable and clean. However it’s not a direct route back to the hotel from the Fairgrounds. There is a concrete median blocking entrance to the driveway entrance. You either have to drive past the hotel on rt 30 to the next exit and circle around local streets to get back to the entrance, or turn at the corner of the hotel, go down a few blocks to the gas station and make a U turn.

Much easier leaving the hotel to the Fairgrounds but I’d stay there again.

Andy are you going  to have a table this year? I tried to e-mail you but don't think it went. If your e-mail has changed please zap me a note at mine. It's in my profile.

Thanks

Larry

I was procrastinating about attending this meet, but registered (online) for my badge today and made a hotel reservation at a place I've stayed at a number of times before. Planning to arrive Wednesday afternoon/evening so I can attend the Round-the-Clock breakfast bright and early on Thursday morning. Will leave from home sometime Friday afternoon/evening.

Going to list a dozen or so U.S. Army locomotives (going to go pretty much all-steam on the layout, with a few early diesels) on our buy/sell forum over the next few days to see if I can possibly make things a bit easy by arranging for York delivery. That worked very well for me in the past.

We (OGR) won't have a dedicated booth there, but I'll be in "official" OGR uniform and will be circulating around, primarily in the Orange Hall. I look forward to seeing all there!

Can't wait!!

The private jet and pilot have been scheduled.  Our penthouse suites in Philadelphia and York are ready for our arrival.  And the private limousine is on call, not sure if we are getting Jeeves or James as the driver.  In anticipation of possible purchases some Swiss accounts have been liquidated, temporarily.  Additionally, tickets are secured for Opening Night for the Philadelphia Flyers vs. Vancouver Canucks game and there is a window of opportunity to acquire Phillies National League Championship Playoff tickets if they get that far.  We already have our San Diego Padres Playoff tickets.

A full week of trains, friends, food and some Flyers hockey!!  What could be better?!!

The latest edition of Clem's York Primer came out, with a new author, Ryan Newman.

Yes......Carol McGinnis sought to retire after the many years of graciously editing it. Ryan stepped up to do it and he's a great guy and I know he'll do a great job.

He is also the Purple Hall Captain.....I'm sure he'd appreciate a "thank you" or a "well done" for all his efforts.

Thanks Peter.  That's nice to know.

what exactly is the pre show?

@MartyE posted:

It is the EDTCA version of the Bandit Meets.

To add to Marty's answer, it is located in the Purple Hall on the fairgrounds from Monday through Wednesday.  And it is a welcome addition to York Week, as well as added value for the EDTCA in that they have the fairgrounds for the whole week and are now bringing in some revenue from the non-meet days.  I've found a few things to buy at the pre-show in the past, and my club mates have found quite a bit to buy there -- probably more than at the other Bandits, but we still find goodies there too.

Andy

IIRC, the last pre-meet sale only had about a dozen vendors.  One of them had a large selection of Atlas reefers; those always seem to attract a lot of attention.  Not a lot of foot traffic when I was there.

I remember hearing some of the vendors complain about poor sales, while others thought it was worthwhile.  My guess is that if items are priced to sell, they will move.
