OK Lionel never made one. But I did! It started life as a 318 electric with PS-2 and now it's a 318 Diesel. I just have to make some custom hand rails for it. Here are some pics and video.

How Clever! Can't say I have seen that before. I will have to look for a resto candidate and try it myself!
Guess that makes it a 318S
Chris
That is one way cool engine..on a craftsman's level of detail. Must have been quite a challenge but the reult is amazing.

Outstanding!!! Absolutely love it. The bad part is that now I want to make one myself. What sound files did you use?
Nice Engine Chris. I saw one of these in the TCA quarterly a few yearsago, and always wondered why Mike never made one of these with PS2 or PS3. this would have been a nice alternate from those Pink Engines. :0
When I saw the one in the TCA quarterly I wasn't even running standard gauge at the time but I thought it was different from what we're use to seeing and I liked it. I based the colors on Boston & Maine My favorite road but no markings. The sound file is from a B&M S-2 switcher which I went to You Tube to see what switcher sounded the best and I decided to go with the S-2 At the cab by the front windows I had to flair out that part of the hood near the cab and used some sheet aluminum to clear the fly wheel on the can motor. I just bought some brass rod from Charles ro today and I'm going to finish up the hand rails.
I had two, flat black painted 252's that someone did this to, decades ago. A very interesting idea.
Both were stolen from our family ranch in Temecula back in 2010.
I never thought I would see anything like this again-very, very cool!
The quality of the modeling of the 318 in this thread is absolutely beautiful.
Outstanding work, Chris!
Thank you all for the kind words. Here are some updated photo's with the finished hand rails.
Very ingenuous Chris! Nice workmanship, a cool loco. Congrats!
Very nicely done, Chris! It should give you a lot of satisfaction to see and admire something you created yourself. Very cool!
She came out very nice Chris.
Very nice!
Beautiful work. Love the caboose too.
Let me add my appreciation for your work, and I too like the caboose. I often wondered why no one made a pre WW2 switcher, now someone has. Great job!
Love it! Great job! I'd love to see this done with at 252 "O" gauge.
