Hey Folks

I had an old, beat up, Lionel search light car.  I removed the search light and its base assembly from the car.  I am going to put it flat on my layout, and shine it on a Betty Boop billboard.  The power to the light will come straight from the track.

Problem is, no matter what type of bulb I put in that thing, I really only get a semi-dull, unfocused light.  I cleaned the lens, but this does not seem to help.

Has anybody put a special bulb in one of these things, or made any other modifications, to get it to shine really bright and focused, like a real search light would do?

(Would connecting it straight to the constant voltage supply of the transformer help?)

Thanks for all ideas and suggestions.

Yes I replaced my bulbs with led and placed them inside of the screw-in bulb holder and ran new wires down three times as bright. imageimageimageSearch on eBay for model train replacement leds.
getting ready to restomod another will post the process on tinplate forum in the next couple of weeks image

search for E10 based LED if you just want to screw in a replacement and not rewire

Thanks for all of the advice above.

Michael, it looks like your housings are bright shiny metal.  Mine are the gray plastic type.  Did your housings come on the tinplate car, or did you have to custom make them?

Also, once you mounted the bulb in the housing, did you replace the plastic lens over the bulb?   In my case, it may well be that the plastic lens is diffusing or blurring the light, rather than focusing or enhancing it.

Thanks very much,

Mannyrock
