For years I have seen many K-Line Golden State aluminum passenger cars at shows.  These are the 18 inch cars.  The problem was that I would see 3 or 4 cars and never a full set.  I have a few passenger cars and figured I would never see a full set of these cars.  Being present when the York meet opened on Thursday, I entered a dealer hall and a dealer had 8 cars new in the box unopened with a price of $385.00 on the set.  I inspected what he had and he made the offer to sell me all 8 cars for $350.00.  Something I never expected or thought I would ever see.  I have a few passenger cars and thought these would be hot on that evil selling sight.  I took the observation car out of the box with Dotty and we both said at the same time WOW.  These are keepers.

My York surprise.

Hi Marty,

You definitely need more passenger cars!! I can remember seeing those in the past, they are very nice cars for sure. I always said K-line did in fact make some great items over the years. Hope all is fine with you & Dotty. I am trying to get momma to make some more of those brownies, but no luck yet!!

Take care,

Jeff

This is a great set; I agree that you should keep it.  Technically there are 10 cars you can get: the original 8-car set, the add on dome, and a factory error dome.  Some folks do not run the domes because the actual Golden State did not have any, but I think they look good. I pull mine with Lionel's Rock Island E6 AA set.  FYI: this E6 set has the actual engine numbers that pulled the GS after WWII.

J Daddy,

I'm probably part of the problem with you not being able to find any Lionel RI E6 AA sets; I bought two to have two powered AAs to pull the 10 cars plus an extra baggage and RPO.  Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures of them before I put them in storage while rebuilding my layout.

The K-Line RI E8s do come up once in awhile and are beautiful engines.  I recommend Marty get a set of these to pull his GS cars; that would be a great consist.

I acquired almost all of the cars as they were released. The only one I missed out on was the second dome car (I believe it was "Golden Moon"), which I was unaware of till well after they'd pretty much vanished. Before Ebay went paypal-only I pursued one example till its going price was well above $110 before dropping out.

Convinced I wasn't going to find one, I added three unboxed MTH Golden Rocket cars I found at York. Just this past one I spotted a couple of GS sets in Silver Hall, but alas, the dome I'm looking for wasn't among them.
