Hi fellows,
Is there an easy way to disconnect the chuff, chuff sound from these locos and still have the whistle work? I have two of them and they run great but the chuff is too loud and makes me crazy. I unplugged the tether but then I lose the whistle. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I thought some of those FARR engines had a switch under the tender.....I could be wrong.....I just looked at my 785 with that type of chuff sound and I can turn off the chuff but still have whistle.....if you can call it a whistle......
I don't think it was until 1984 when Lionel decided to add the on/off switch the Mighty Sound of Static starting with the 783 Hudson.

IIRC, the chuff-chuff is triggered by a cam and switch inside the loco. Disconnect that switch and perhaps you'll lose the chuff without losing the whistle?
Is that cam and switch in the loco or in the tender?
What specific engine? The UP 2-8-4 8002, the chuff switch is on the tender truck., The Pennsy turbine (#5) has a 5 pin connector and has a circuit board that the SOS would be disconnected at the locomotive. Number 1 the Santa Fe 4-6-4, 8900 had no whistle at all, just sound of steam. The Great Northern 4-8-4, (#3) and Southern 2-8-2 (#4) had different style boards, like the PRR turbine. Basically each FARR engine has a different set up.
There should be 3 wires from loco to tender. Power, ground, and back EMF. The back EMF wire looks at brush noise and the electronics creates a chuff pulse relevant to the motor speed. Remove the wires one at a time to determine which wire drives the chuff and leave it disconnected.

If it is a later engine that uses the 3 pin connector, disconnect the field wire at the top of the brushplate that goes to the tether.
