During the month, I was commissioned by Chris (OGR member Lehigh Valley Railroad) to upgrade a few of his TMCC locomotives to ERR Cruise to get 100 speed steps.

One was a Lionel ALCO C-420, the second was a K-Line GP38-2, and the third was a GE U25B. The C-420 and GP38-2 had their DCDR's replaced with the Cruise M now, and are just awaiting new LED lighting. While waiting, I chose to get started on the U25B. However, unlike the first two engines, it had no DCDR for the Cruise M to replace. Here's how the electronics work under the hood:

Is this one of those engines that needs to have the whole electronics package replaced in order to get Cruise? Any help is, as always, appreciated.

Looks like the TAS SAW board.  That is indeed one that you have to replace the whole shooting match.

What you can do is buy a Lionel diesel motherboard and transplant the three boards to it and then use the CC-M if you like.

Another option is to buy the Cruise Commander and then the RailSounds Powered Motherboard from Lionel and use the existing sound card.

If I were doing the job, I'd just buy the Cruise Commander and RailSounds Commander and do a full upgrade.

Like John says if its a SAW board you will basically have to change everything but make sure it is a SAW board. I have both SAW boards and EOB boards and the one in the picture is not exactly like either of the ones I have. TAS had various versions over the years. To make sure pull the daughterboards and check whats printed on the motherboard.

Edit, if it has EOB it will have a tach strip and sensor on the flywheel. If not its a SAW board.
