The large pipes and tanks - whaever they are, on the right side of the loco seem to be smaller than they are in photos. Many of the pipes, etc., that run all over the loco seem less prominent than in old photos of it. This may be the paint - I'm considering repainting it flat or satin black, but not sure.
Again, maybe it did not have alot of external equipment and rivet detail and seams to be detailed. But in photos the S-2 appeared to. Anyway, alongside the H7, for example, it looks less detailed - not quite toy-like, but less like a really good model than that loco.
Hey Lee, it has been over a week and no other detail comments have been expressed. On another thread someone said it lacked detail but when questioned they had no specifics and only stated "that is what others have said."
I also see what you say when looking at photos. It does appear or maybe feel like the Exhaust pipe is not in proportion. I have several online, magazine and book photos of the Pennsy S2. I printed some out plus used some from magazine. Using a digital caliper I miked the parts in question which leaves some accuracy to question. Anyway, miking the turbine exhaust housing and exhaust pipe from 8 photos I got a ratio of pipe to housing ranging from 49 to 46%. Miking the model which I could not get a good perch on the pipe due to fatness of caliper jaws, I got 47%.
I miked the wheels which very closely scaled in at a 1:48 68-inches as should be. Comparing the wheels to the turbine exhaust on model and pictures all came in close to the wheels being 1.48% of turbine housing.
Someone did make a comment about the class lamps being too big. And again comparing the class lamps to headlight model to photos the ratio was lamps .66% of headlight.
Oh and for the heck of it I visually compared a couple of the rivet patterns which appeared shot on.
There actually is very little cast on piping detail the sanding pipes. All FOUR throttle rods are add on detail.
This is a pic of my 38028 which appears to look just like yours.
Now the Pennsy S2 was actually very sleek. It is actually sleeker than a N&W J. The S2 does NOT have a steamchest, piston rod, crosshead guide, crosshead, valve gear, main rod, ecentric crank, and ecentric. The S2 only has a whirling connecting rod.
Your H7 has four set of these S2 none. Plus the front set of engines is articulated with pivoting steam piping. So there is absolutely more stuff to be detailed on the H7.
So just saying the S2 appears pretty much spot on.
