Alco MP 205

These were basic, near bottom-of-the-line locomotives.  What you have is the way they were all decorated.

Your 205 Missouri Pacific ALCOs look correct to me.  I don't think there are any known variations in the decoration. Some came with a metal support installed to help protect the fragile front apron. It was painted to match the body. 


 

They were cataloged (set#1575) by Lionel 1957 and 58 a very popular 027 set for Lionel, they also released it as #219 in a uncatalogued set 1959 for Sears. I seem to remember LTI may have released a MP Alco with a nose decal in the 1990's I need to research that.

I'm out of the country and haven't seen the 205 yet and only have the pics from Ebay. I don't know if these have the blue painted metal support. It looks like the apron on both is intact. If its the plastic ver. from what I'm reading I should consider myself lucky.

Nice picture! I'm out of the country and can't wait to fool around with this one. I've read that they are real pullers. I thought Lionel gave up on the magnatraction before this was made. I have some graduated trestle that I would like to use. I looked at some pictures of the real Locos and like the two tone graphics with the Screaming Eagle design that MP used. This not having a lot of collector value, probably won't make it any less valuable.

I guess adding the MP Screaming Eagle and some two tone graphics like the real ones had won't hurt its value any then.

Postwar Lionel 205 Missouri Pacific "AA" ALCOs with good aprons aren't exactly common.
Altering them most certainly will impact their resale value.

That written, they are your trains to do with as you please.

If I was to 'upgrade' them, the only thing I would do is add the round buzz saw herold decal to the nose. Then no permanent damage.
