The S-Gauge and O-Gauge reverse units are wired the same. Contact pressure on the drum is very important and lubricating the pawl so it drops when power is interrupted should help with reliability.
Just one point, the prewar American Flyer locos use different contact sets, the contacts on the front of the reverse unit are the same as the postwar, but the off set contacts on top of the reverse unit are opposite arranged, off set to the left, instead of to the right, as postwar locos use. I actually have fixed this loco! 
I have seen online that you will have to replace the fingers in the reverse unit. To me, that's BALONY! I always use the original contacts in my Lionel trains and they're fine, why not AF? Sometimes I'll put a drop of solder on them if they're worn out.
I am trying to correctly wire my 565 but am not quite smart enough to understand any previous posts regarding that engine. To that end, I have attached my drawing with inquiries for this wiring. I would very much appreciate anyone's expertise.
An additional question, I see the pickup on the bottom but no wire from same.

I believe that the frame and wheels are part of the circuit so a fourth wire isn’t used.
