To CALNNC and everyone, Thank you for mentioning Helene. Indeed, we must not forget the people, victims and the devastating loss of those displaced, the loss of property and life. I hope that the local media in Helene is continuing to update the story. Has the news moved on and stopped reporting? I don't live in NC, has there been any updates?  And more must be done to support our American citizens. And we don't hear of any updates about the freight train that derailed in February 2023 in East Palestine, Ohio. I read on the Trains Magazine Daily News Feed, which is part of my subscription, that the derailment was on Feb. 3rd, and I believe the news story did not go National until Feb. 15, 2023.

Don't forget those affected by Helene in NC.  It is getting colder here, displaced people are sill living in tents waiting for those FEMA trailers, people are still looking for loved ones.  Some will never be found. There is a lot of 'empty' in their lives.

As a member of the WNC community, we are reminded daily of the hardships of our "neighbors". I often post on my personal FB page updates and stories. I do not want people to forget. It will go down into the low 20s each night coming up and even 18 on Monday. Yes, many are still in tents or in tiny homes which are basically sheds built by volunteers, Mennonite and others. These folks did not have flood insurance because they were not in a flood zone! Also, many lost homes due to mudslides which were not covered either. Who knew that you needed flood ins for a mudslide, not me? Here in Hendersonville, there were 4 deaths that I know of, and I only know that because of FB. The work of the volunteer groups, churches, and many individuals helping each other has been so humbling.

In the keep us posted category, here is  a locally made video, somewhat railroad centered, about Spruce Pine NC.  There are many other private videos on Youtube showing the destruction, one tracks the rise of Cane Creek by one landowner who watched the river rise to the point he lost everything.  In the Hendersonville aree, rail cars and locomotive are land locked as trackage to Asheville is completely gone or washed out such that rail is hanging in space.  A lot of what was left of the Saluda Grade is gone down toward the Tryon area.

@CALNNC Thank you for the video.  I had to stop watching partway through a while after showing the washouts.  A young man from our church went down for a while.  He had chain saw duty.  His mum showed me a photograph of him holding a chain saw with a 3-foot long bar.  That was some serious work.  I'm praying for everyone there. @Mikki

Praying for all those in service to our country both away and here at home.

I thought this thread was going to address those who lost loved ones this year.  I'm praying for all of them and us.
