My friend has an AF set I am guessing from the mid 1950's. Steam 2-4-2 with attached tender and 3 freight cars, old flyer two rail track, transformer. Looks like it is in good condition, but needs cleaning. Any thoughts on what would be best for him on how to have someone else enjoy it?

You probably mean 4-4-2 which is an Atlantic. Gilbert never made a 2 wheel lead truck loco. Most Atlantic sets are very common. To determine a value you need to get the number of the loco and cars. Early Atlantic's had a 4 piece cast assembly where later models had a 1 piece cast then 1 piece plastic boiler. Later plastic boiler loco were subject to pilot steps being broken off and handrail damage. Early car were generally bottom of the line with American Flyer lettering. Later sets had slightly better cars.

EBay if he won't mind packing it all up carefully and shipping. He'll get the most that someone is willing to pay. This forum if he wants to join us, and again, do the packing and shipping. Craig's List if he just wants someone to come by the house and pick it up, and put a price on it.
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas, gentlemen. I printed this off and will give to him in the morning when I see him.

You could also post pictures and descriptions here on the forum and see if someone wants to buy the set.
