LUG October 2017

Once again it's time for the Legacy Users Group Meeting!

Orange Hall Meeting Room

(Enter front doors and to the right at the end of the lobby)

October 20th, 2017 7:45 AM

The Lionel Legacy User’s Group is not associated with Lionel Trains in any way other than sharing the enjoyment and trading of information related to operating the Lionel Legacy System!

Agenda pdf.

Welcome to the Legacy Users Group meeting.  What an exciting time for Legacy.  With the advent of the Bluetooth capabilities this meeting will be an interesting mix of new and existing technology!  I suspect that Bluetooth will be the main subject matter due to the integration into Legacy engines!

As always we ask that you post any questions in this thread that you want answered by Jon Zahornacky, Rudy Trubitt, Dave Olson, and Dean Brasseur.  All questions should be directly related to Legacy System's operation, LCS, and I will include questions on Bluetooth control as it pertains to Legacy engines.  Production related questions such as "when will you make XYZ in Legacy?" should be referred to the Lionel booth or Lionel's website "Talk to Us".  Please for the best possible answers make your question clear and to the point.  It makes it much easier for them to give the best answer.  I don't mind following up if need be but again please try your best to be clear in your questions.  We all benefit from the answers!  I'll continue to update this post as the agenda becomes available and post it before the last week.  Questions can be submitted up until October 9th to give Lionel time to give us the best answer!

Dave Olson Lionel's Director of Engineering and Dean Brasseur Lionel's Director of Customer Service have already said they'll be attending and we've asked Dave to possibly smuggle in some items to show us!  I'm looking forward to see what Dave and the Lionel team are working on.  Dean will be able to answer questions from a Customer Service perspective!

We once again will support the LCS partners and will have any updates and information on hand.

I will also have a question for the group as well.

If you would like to get your Legacy system updated to the latest and greatest we'll have a couple of options. Bring your system (Cab2 and Base) and we can update it. Bring 2 black or writable GRJ modules and we'll walk you through the procedure to make them and test them before you leave. The current versions are 1.6 for the Legacy base and 1.61 for CAB2.  If the LC+ Universal Remote Update is available by the time of the meeting we will upgrade those as well!

The Legacy Users group would like to thank in advance Jon, Rudy, Dave, and Dean as well as the entire Lionel Team for their continued support of our efforts to pass along information pertaining to all thing Legacy.  We would also like to thank the EDTCA for providing the room for our meeting.  Most of all we would like to thank all of you for sharing your experiences and questions.

Your host for the Legacy Users Group is Marty Eibeck (MartyE)

We are planning to record the event once again for those who cannot attend. Thanks to Dave Slie for providing this!

As always, I am sure some of the questions asked here could be answered by some of our forum members but I ask they refrain from doing so.  I promote that we'll send the questions to JonZ and Lionel to answer and it's what i do.

So without further notice fell free to post your questions.

question; is there any thinking about improving the "record" feature on the CAB2. ie, more then one loco, more then one recording?

This is a frequent and good question.  Multiple locomotives can be on a recording.

I always hoped they could make the black module store a recording at minimal or on a PC using LSU.  At least you could load it back into the Cab2 without rebuilding it.

It will be on the "list for Jon and Lionel to answer.  Maybe something has changed.

I just bought a brand new base and Cab 2, so I will be bringing mine along too!  Thank you very much!!

Before you bring it, check the version since it's new it may have the current version.  It may save you the hassle.  Plug in the base and let it boot up and turn on the remote.  Once the Cab2 is on, push the CTC button and it will display the Base and Cab version.  If it's Base 1.6 and Cab2 1.61 then you're good to go.  If not we'll be happy to take care of you!

One of my pet peeves with both Lionel and MTH is they don't identify the "shipped version" of software on the outside of the packaging of their respective command systems.  It would save LHS's and the consumer a bit of grief having to open and power the units to confirm the software on the units.  A simple sticker would be awesome.

Sounds like a good question for the Legacy Meeting...

Can Lionel put the "shipped version" of software for the 990 system on the outside of the packaging via a sticker?

Ah ha, Marty.  Both my Base and Cab2 are at 1.60.  So it looks like the Cab2 needs updated to 1.61.  Do I need to bring the Base along, or just the Cab2?  Thank you!!

Technically just  the CAB2 unless you want to make sure it connects with your  base after the upgrade.  I'll have my base on hand so we can check it with it.  If it connects with mine it will connect with your.  Your call.

I didn't think of that.  I'll bring both, since I am totally new to Legacy.  I want to make sure it connects to the base; hoping I learn what to look for.  Thank you very much!!

Given a bluetooth capable engine, sitting on the track under power but not under direct operation -- it seems like then one could treat it as a remote bluetooth speaker system -- to stream sounds to it (from another bluetooth connecting device such as a smart phone), to play through its sound subsystem ...  that might be kinda fun.

Is this a question?  I will add it to the list but suspect this isn't part of the design.

Should we ask about switches?  It may be this has been asked to death -- in which case strike it.  But I've been wondering if wider curved switches are coming to match the wider curves now available in Fastrack.  To the best of my knowledge O72 switches are the widest (most lax) switches available.  But fastrack now comes in O84 and O96.

That would be a production question better for "Talk to Us" or the folks at the Lionel Booth.  We try to keep these questions related as close to Legacy as we can.

Ah... and poking around the internet I don't see a lot of folks screaming for it -- probably the demand isn't there because of space issues.  But I ponied up recently though for O84 and rather like it, and now want to ditch all my O72 and less...   I was thinking of trying O96...  but realized the switches do not match.  Oh well, not a big deal.  Anyway OFF TOPIC!

Hi Marty -

I will not be able to make the meeting but I had a few questions:

1) With Bluetooth technology can Lionel expand its sound features to an under the table sub woofer type sound booster like other train manufactures have?

2) With allot of work going on with the Beta test of the TMCC  boosting electronics can Lionel support financially and technically GRJ's product,  and offer this product quickly for customers in the future for larger basement layouts?

3) When will the Android app version of Legacy control be available?

4) How can consumers just buy additional Legacy cab 2 remotes without the 993 base.

6) Is there a way to turn all the diesel horns on in multiple unit consist (lash-up TR ), so they all sound at once for a bigger sound?

7) Will Lionel still produce the Black modules for Legacy updates?

8) With Bluetooth technology, does this phase out the LCS technology?

9) What is the new Legacy AUX 3 button and what does it do?

10) Can additional crew talk be added ?

11) Will Lionel ever release a down load able sound set / up grade if the consumer wishes to changes whistles, chuffs, or other sounds?

12) Is there a future for Legacy controlled electro couplers on cars? If not how about stationary uncouplers in a compact modular design?

13) Can the above technology be expanded to a universal receiver to activate other accessories around the layout without purchasing an S1 or S2?

14) Will there be any future development done with Legacy to control DCS trains as well?

15) Will there be any additional products on a train detection devise around the layout?

16) With the advent of the Lionel sensor track  - could a similar version be released that could feature a electronic car inspection device?

17) Will there be additional improvements on blinking light error code messages for root causing Legacy engines and their features not working? (i.e. loss of signal, grounded signal, motor driver board error, secondary smoke unit not working, etc. )

Thank you!
