The CNW does look good with the shine.  If it were me, I'd keep it like that.  Could run it as either factory fresh, newly restored or pride of the town.

Yes I added them, may not be pro typical but I liked the look.

While a 2-8-0 is normally a freight engine, I don't see why you couldn't have a shiny one.  Here's a Seaboard 4-6-0 passenger engine with a good sheen to it:

 

 

I'm sure some engineers took pride in how clean their engines looked, maybe you just have a very attentive crew on board

As a matter of fact, I think this SAL class of engine once belonged to the CNW.

That's exactly what I was thinking, the shiny engine under the tree Christmas morning feeling.

I'm a Tinplater, so the gloss sure works for me.  Really magnificent job there, very nicely done indeed!

and I'm drooling ver this Pennsy beauty too!
