Having just reset a Kline allegheny to re-establish proper smoke, the issues of what codes to use and what some other codes do came up.

 

The Kline instructions say use "4".  Lionel documents also have "43" as a code for the 28000 series locos which would be similar.  R2 in engine, RS in tender and wire for serial data.

 

my instructions for some of my 28000 series locks say to use "34".  

 

The 28000 series have 27ohm piston smoke, the allegheny has 27 ohm fan driven smoke.

 

some one stated there smoke pulses in neutral, but does fine in motion.  I have not experienced that.

 

but what do the two digit codes do differently, the engines are fundamentally the same.  I used the 43 code in the kline and it worked fine.

 

this was brought up a year ago, and some of the codes were explained, but not some of these differences.

 

what do these codes do differently, does the sequence matter?  Thanks, G

Let me see if I can explain this. For people that has been in the military, they should understand. 

 

 You have civilians that are going in all directions until they are trained, we will call them serial. Now you have the Drill Instructor that is going to train them, we will call him the R2LC. When programmed the R2  trains these serial to go in a certain direction at a specific time thus obeying orders. This affects the serial data whether in normal or inverted mode. If I remember correctly and don't quote me on this, code 43 is headlight on all the time when engine is in reverse. Code 74 is for chuff in conventional and H.L. on all the time. Usually the engines that require these code have mechanical smoke units and I.R tethers. Smoke on in reverse ?.   As John said maybe Jon or Mike can give us more insight.

Bill,  I have the old notes from jon&mike, but all of the two and three digit codes were not discussed, and it's is possible some of this older (2000) stuff is not documented.  Some codes turn serial off, others invert it(why?), some seem to apply to engines with ir tether.  I understand the feature differences, but it would be nice to understand the differences when the loco features are the same. i did check my notes and my 2000 series 28000 engines use the code 07 L2RC.  G

Here is a summary of posted info I have on the R2LC and the codes.  Jon Z provided some more details and the #3 is explained.  Still no specific info.  Not sure what difference the Inverted non inverted or Serial on or off in conventional does.  Most of this was for the 1999 coding.  I imagine most has to do with Railsounds as far as the inversion or serial off.  I know the 28000 series had either Signal Sounds or RS, and some where upgradeable and others came fully command.  My 28000 have Code 7 R2LC and they respond to AUX1 8-9 for smoke.  I know an early post said Code 07 don't have that capability, but mine do.  G

 

All told there are a total of 7 R2LC's that were produced thus far. 

They are as follows; 

C04 (early modular TMCC locos and command ready modular boards)

C05 (used exclusively in the Lionel Backshop)

C06 (used in the later TMCC steamers (such as the later semi scale pacifics and hudsons, after the whole motherboard issues were corrected)

C07 (used initially in the C-420's only, but then used by licensees) Also used in the 28000 Series

C08 (the most common, produced in the largest number, compatible with all aftermarket upgrade boards, this is the board pretty much everyone uses; Atlas O, 3rd Rail, Weaver, K-Line (even the new SD70MAC's!, etc. the C08 board is also the one that will be sent to anyone who orders an R2LC from either us or DD.)

C08 board will sub for a CO7, but you need to reverse the marker light polarity.

C11 (used in newer RS 5.0 locos with Odyssey)

C13 (U33 now the most current R2LC, used in all new production Lionel stuff with RS 5.0 and Odyssey)

 While I really cannot comment on the differences internally with the software I can tell you that there are some (a very few at that) C06 boards with tunerless pots in circulation. Most all C04's, C06 and C07's have tuner pots (shiny metal adjustable frequency potentiometers) that can easily come out of tune to the 455KHz TMCC frequency if bounced around in shipping, etc. There are some C07's, all C08's, C11's and C13's have tunerless pots, meaning they withstand the bounces in shipping and are fixed to the 455KHz frequency.

 Early C04, C06 and C07 boards do not support the AUX1 + 8 feature in the program mode (to turn smoke on/off at 12VAC constant) the Late C07, C08, C11 and C13's do support the AUX1 + 8 program feature.

R4LC boards are for Legacy engines with the quilling whistle.

R6LC are used in Vision engines with more options.

 

 

STEAM

7 = Serial Data “UN” Inverted.  Keeps serial data on in conventional

4 = Front Headlight on all the time; Rear light directional

0 = Inverts serial data from R2LC to RailSounds

 

DIESEL

8 = AUX 9 Boost for Smoke (14V versus 12)

6 = Smoke out as CAB Light

5 = Smoke Output as pulsing Strobe

 

7 maybe for IR Tethered engines

3 for wired harness??

I don't really know.  I used the 2 digit in the Allegheny from K-line and it works fine.  My 28000 which are very similar to the K-line set up but 27ohm piston smoke instead of 27ohm fan smoke work the same too.  I don't no what inversion, on or off of serial in convention does.

 

I do think the "7" code had to do with AD-20 on the IR tether units.  G

   The diesels also use a AD20 to control serial data, these also have ditch lights that work when sounding the horn only in Command. The ditch lights operate off the AD20.

 

 

  I have never needed to know what the code definitions are used for because I don't trouble shoot the codes but the systems of Tmcc. The manual will have the code to use or look it up on the Lionels site  and here if the first two fail. 

 

 Program a diesel with code 4 and see what happens.

Bill,  Thank you for the input.  So if I use code 4 alone instead of 43 for my 28030 do I get additional features in conventional?  Or does it prevent the DC offsets from working in conventional?

 

This is not so much for trouble shooting but to understand what they do and why.

 

Part of my curiosity has been engines with the same set up of R2LC in engine, RS in Tender, wire tether and smoke controlled by AUX1 8 and 9 can have codes 4, 34, 43.  I believe 34 and 43 may do the same thing but I don't know for sure.

Using code four on your 28030 might cause the tender light to stay on when running forward. Using the wrong code could cause the smoke unit not to smoke in reverse.

 There is a lot of variables, program one engine with the correct code, make notes on all functions and then program with a different code. Again make notes on what functions are the same and whats different. That might take awhile but if you can Get Mike or Jon to explain the differences, that might be easier.

Well with code 43 in conventional the K-Line with Code 08 R2LC doesn't smoke as well in conventional as it does in command (expected).  It smoke in forward, puffs in neutral and doesn't smoke in reverse.  The headlight stays on, the reverse light cycles correctly, but stays on in neutral (both N before Rev and N before Fwd). Transformer Bell and Whistle button only work in conventional.

 

Command mode has smoke on full in F, N and R.  Lights cycle correctly, headlight always on, crew talk works, and AUX1 8/9 works for smoke.   Will see what a 4 does next.  G

Used Code 4 and the response was the same, though the smoke may have even been less, but can't say for sure.

 

What is interesting is this engine runs at a nice speed down at 7-8V which is why I think the smoke is so poor.  For conventional ops, it definitely needs a lower element resistance.  Command mode is fine.  G
