With York just over a month away, as I have done in the past, I am offering to upgrade Legacy Systems or create modules (supplied by you) to the latest 1.6 Base and 1.72 Cab2 at York.  I will be there on Thursday and Friday.  Typically I do a 1/2 hour each session on Thursday at 3:30PM and Friday at 11:30AM to the right of the Orange Hall lobby near the meeting rooms.  As long as someone replies here or to me via email I will make sure I have everything with me.

If I do a system upgrade using my modules I will make sure that the Base and Cab are communicating.  If I make modules (supplied by you) I will test them on my system before you leave so we know they were programmed correctly.

There is absolutely no charge to do this other than some conversation and to pay it forward.  This offer is for everyone even if not a member on this forum.  I just need to know that someone is coming for those times above.  Takes less than 5 minutes, less if I don't have to make modules.

You can make modules using the GRJ method.  I let him post the link as he also has in the past done System Upgrades only so I suspect he'll chime in.

Ok dumb question time.  What is the benefit of using a module over just entering the info for the particular locomotive into my Cab2 screen? I have some older locos with modules but the new ones don't come with them.

Thanks

Well the module we are discussing actually update the system software.

As far as the locomotive modules, speed is the main advantage.  There was 1 or 2 that had specific icons only available via the module.  I believe the first UPFEFs were one of them.  After that either manual entry or modules do the same thing.  Now a sensor track does the same thing as the module used to.

Not dumb.  You are thinking of the wrong modules.  What you are thinking of is the orange engine modules.  What Marty is referring to is the blue/black modules to update the legacy remote and the legacy base.  There is software running in the Legacy base and the legacy remote.  You create a module with software updates on it and then update the legacy remote and base.  Current version of the software is 1.7 for the remote and 1.6 for the base.

I saw a post somewhere else and want to emphasize, if you are upgrading the base or handheld you must create or have a an upgrade module for each one.  A base cannot be upgraded via a PC only. You can use the base to create an base upgrade module which then is used to upgrade the base discrete from the PC.

This is why I offer this service as it can be difficult for folks who are not familiar with the procedure to either create or obtain the modules.

FWIW, I expanded my Module Mod thread to include multi-engine modules.

Free Black or Orange Modules for Legacy

If you have old White modules, you can use those to create engine modules to save configurations to.  The white modules can't be converted to black modules as they only have one chip, but they make dandy multi-engine modules.  You can also, of course, use them for a single engine module to replace a Legacy Orange Module.

Your late!  LOL!  Thanks for posting the link John.

Marty,

Thanks for doing this.  I have a base and remote I would like updated on Friday.  When is the best time for you so you can get maximum shopping in?

Hi Marty:

This is a very kind and generous offer.  Do you have any openings early Friday afternoon.  I would like to have my base and both remotes upgraded.  If not, what times do you have available on Friday?

Thanks,

Don

11:30 am works best for me.  If that doesn't work, @gunrunnerjohn will be at Hennings with upgrade modules.  I'm usually ready for a break at 11:30 so that's best.

OK let's wrap this up.

I'll be doing a 1/2 hour each session on Thursday at 3:30 PM and Friday at 11:30 AM to the right of the Orange Hall lobby near the meeting rooms.

Right now it doesn't appear we'll be making any modules but I'll have my PC just in case.  If you need modules made you will have to supply 2 writable modules.  I don't have any.  If you are bringing your Base and Remote I'll have a power supply with me.  We'll test them (make sure they boot and communicate with each other) before you leave.

If you miss me see @gunrunnerjohn post right above.

I'll check here to see if anyone jumps in but it looks like maybe 3 or 4 folks each day.

Marty, this is a terrific thing you do for those people in the Hobby who updating the cab 2 can be quite scary Lionel, does not make anything easy with the direction books they put out. I remember when I did mine. I held my breath even though I’m extremely computer savvy. Again, Marty well done.

If you have to write the modules, it does take a little thinking, the actual update is really quick.  A minute or two and both pieces are updated!  Nowadays, finding the black modules seems to be the hardest thing.

The only stock I found is Amazon, and they wanted $50 for them!   Adding to the insult, they want $10 to ship it!  And, they only had one left, apparently people are actually paying $60 for these!

I still like my deal best.
