Looking at MTH’s and Lionel’s new catalogs it seems like they did not introduced any new tooling this time, other than Lionel’s new 21” passenger cars.  Granted, my train focus is limited to a few eastern roads and a specific time frame, so I will have missed new offerings of more modern equipment.

This got me interested in knowing what new tooling was introduced this year by all the manufacturers.   I did see where Bachman was advertising a new GG1, but it looked like my old Williams one so I’m not sure what was new about it.  SMR is doing a new engine.  There were also several items listed by the manufacturers as new that were just new paint schemes, not new tooling.

So if you know of any offerings this year that used brand new tooling, list them here.  It will be interesting to see who is expanding their product line.

The cost of cutting molds in Asia has almost tripled in the last ten years.  Simple supply and demand. Same number of tooling companies....more demand. Our hobby is a tiny segment. Add that to a library full of tooling paid for long ago......reissues are the answer......small additions or changes are affordable.....but complete tools in a soft market.....not as easy.

AMCDave is always a voice of logic, or more accurately, reality, when it comes to these types of questions. He got it right.

But don't take his word for it. Mike Wolf addresses this very question.

These TCA presentations from YORK week are always worth taking the time to view. Very often, questions that are frequently asked here on the forum, are answered by the company CEO's and representatives in these presentations. But considering the low view numbers, not many people are bothering to take advantage of these valuable presentations made by the various train companies.
