I am purchasing 2 of the latest MTH SOO GP-9 engines, and will be looking for a matching white and red caboose. I see that the latest MTH offering is white cars with blue doors. Is there a prototypical reason they would have done these doors in blue as opposed to naturally making the doors red to match the scheme on the engines and caboose?

Blue doors were for potato loading.

Thanks for the quick response. I can't get my eyes around the blue doors with a long consist with caboose and engine painted in red and white. My thought was to paint the doors with Tamiya XF-7 which would be a close match. If it ruins the realism of the boxcar, then it is a not starter. Have to think this one out. By the time I decide, they will be gone and that may work out the best. Red doors in 6 pack would have been cool.
The blue doors were on Refrigerated or Insulated cars painted between 1955-1962, not regular Soo Line box car.

If you want a long string of Soo Line box cars with red doors, you will have to order sets of 4 from Menards.
The only prototype photo I could locate online for the Soo Line potato reefer:
The diagrams from Hi-Ball Graphics decal sets:
The Soo had 40 such spud cars, but they seemed to avoid the cameras pretty well.

I also found the reference to the "Potato Cars" I ordered both 6 packs from Mr. Muffin. I found an extended vision caboose from Lionel that looks pretty sweet. At this point I should have a nice set rolling. I'm not a SOO Line person, but saw the engine in Mr. Muffins booth and liked it a lot. I will check out the red door units on Menards. Thanks all for your help.
Menards is all sold out of their SOO LINE box cars.
What is needed in O scale is the 7-Post 50' box car so that there can be accurate model of the SOO LINE 50' box cars.
Fox Valley Models makes this box car in HO scale and N scale.
