Hello,

Thinking about filling about 10 flat cars with WWII military equipment.
I know that scale's vary, 1/43, 1/48, 1/50, I am shopping for some pretty
good models of equipment, but I can't spend $100 per tank! Yikes.
Suggestions?

Also, if anybody has some extra Red Caboose 42 flat cars laying around of
similar, I would be interested.

Thanks,

ncng

PS Do you have any pictures of your train?

I made my tank train with these. They are excellent 1/48 scale models that are simple to assemble. Once they are painted properly, the look great on a flat car and they are light.

The Solido diecast tanks were too heavy and made the flat cars top heavy.

The Tamiya kits were too expensive, plus they were complicated to assemble.

The Revell kits were cheap and did the job nicely.

While tanks were usually loaded on flat cars, other equipment such as jeeps, 4X4 Dodge trucks, ambulances and even artillery pieces were often loaded on gondola cars, especially those with drop ends.  During the postwar period, the Western Maryland often had only one or two cars with military equipment in a train.  The equipment was being rotated back and forth between the Letterkenney Army Depot in southern Pennsylvania  and Germany.

There have been several posts in the past couple of years by members creating their own military transport trains in varying level of detail. From the highly detailed to the toy-like. Try the search feature. Here's one from March 2016 of the last few cars Scrapiron Scher put together. Since he assembled 20 or so this last go-round he has a few posts about them. He also did several back in 2013/14.

Hope this helps.
