I'm curious if any of you seriously weather the Atlas Billboard woodside reefers. I am tempted, but then again such nice graphics!

Hi Dennis, I am intending on weathering quite a few of my reefer cars along with other types of cars. I had to weigh the impact of what the car was worth new and what and how that value would be affected when weathered. I decided that the value of the car may not be heavily affected if the weathering looks realistic. I have started to weather some of my cars, This is a brand new Swift's refrigerator car weathered with 70% alcohol and india ink for a dirty look. I also intend on using an airbrush on some of them and also anything else, buildings, vehicles, etc that will look good weathered. I have decided to stay with making things look realistic. Bill

I weather mine. But what I run I’m not sure would qualify as a Billboard Reefer.
I try to go on the lighter side and do more of a dusting. I’m not sure just how weathered these cars would have got in real life. The true Billboard cars were banned in the early 30’s and re decorated. Not sure when they were first done up in these schemes but they still may have looked good in their final days.

I like weathered cars, I think it makes them look like the real thing. I also think Kadees completes the look.
I would expect that the billboard reefers would have at most only light weathering as they were used for advertising by their respective owners.

So far I have converted a few of them to Kadee 745's and sprayed the trucks and underframe with a combination of flat Grey/Black primer which looks like the weathered Black. I'm thinking of spraying the roofs of a couple of the Black roof reefers as well with that same paint. Then I need to pick up some Dullcoat and figure out what level of grimey wash I wish to go to. It won't be much, maybe just enough to take some of the sheen off them. I will say this, converting the MTH premier cars to Kadee's is a bit of work since you have to completely disassemble the trucks, springs and all and then do a little hacking to ensure they clear the Kadee box. I did get pretty good at it by the 5th or 6th car though lol. And those scale wood reefers shure look a ton better with a scale coupler on there. No, I'm not going to moan about the Kadee trip wire.
