It's wired in series with the center rail power supply lead.
Here is an interesting video - interesting because the older(1972 vintage) controller(red) is actually not a very good unit due to under sized wiring and VERY undersized diodes, and a very temperamental copper strip leaf switch that typically led to their early demise.

I you are going to use the 5906 , open it up and replace the skinny wires with at least 18 awg 16-awg would be better. easy to do.

I assume solid is preferred over strand?? I was a carpenter, not an electrician!
Either one is fine.
Stranded would be preferred. Solid is too hard to work with and should ONLY be considered if securly,permantly, mounted, but i still recommend stranded wire.
