I have tried everything I can think of to load a new 5v sound file into a Premier GP38 (20-2255-1).

No matter what I do I always get "Unable to determine engine's state" after the DCS Loader makes 3 attempts to connect. I've clicked "retry" many times and also closed the DCS Loader and re-opened it.

I checked that the TIU (RevL) communicates with the engine by starting it up on the programming track

I've tried both the Parallel and USB connectors with my PC.

I tried a different 5v sound file but keep getting the same result.

The files I tried are: (p022pfgp38-2___all031013afin.mth) and (5v r022pf5dash8__all040924afin.mth) and get the same message with both.

Any suggestions appreciated.

John,

You can't load a file into an engine that has been factory reset, it must have an ID assigned.

Are you sure about that?

Every PS2 or PS3 always has an engine number in its board's memory. New engines come with an ID# of "1" right from the factory. New boards are the same. If that wasn't the case, DCS couldn't add a new engine.

Wen you add an engine to a DCS Remote, whatever DCS ID# is assigned in the remote is incremented by +1 and goes in the engine's memory.

In summary:

  • A DCS engine comes from the factory with an engine number of "1"
  • A DCS engine Utah's ben added to a DCS Remote has an engine ID# equal to its "DCS ID# + 1".

The DCS App works the same way to add engines as does the DCS Remote.

This and a whole lot more is all in The DCS Companion 3rd Edition", available for purchase  from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book!

I struggle to do anything with engines that have dead batteries. I'm thinking that although the system should be able to talk to it with the power on the rails, it can't change anything or maybe even read the board's memory?

I don't know about the 5 volts as I didn't have any. My first one just arrived and..... the battery's dead. Well very low anyways. I think I'll be swapping it out. It tried to power up and the smoke motor comes on but no sounds. I'm charging a replacement battery to test. It acts like it's locked. So I'll be gaining some new experience soon.

It's the TIU!!!!

The engine had address #15 and I was able to edit the name and address. I tested signal strength - 10, made sure the connections were Red/Red and Black/Black and operated the engine on the programming track without a problem.

I only have one 5v engine so I put a 3v engine on the program track and tried to load a new 3v sound file - same result. I've attached a photo of the 5v error message.

I connected another Rev L TIU to the programming track and loaded both 5v files without a hitch.

Looks like the TIU works fine in operating mode but won't allow file uploads.

Thanks to you all for helping me through this.
