Unfortunately we are at the mercy of MTH ad LIONEL whose shipment dates are not made known and subject to many variables. Luckily I have only one item on order (MTH AEM AMTRAK) which has been pushed back several times so I now have the cash in reserve and am anxiously waiting the delivery announcement

David,  Let me know if you are having a sell off to pay for your new trains. Just ran the Lionel Mallets yesterday, ( I got from you a year ago) so thanks again for a deal and Merry Christmas to you and your family

Steve

BTO sounds great if you want it  fast but I believe BTO is a joke because most of what is BTO is still on the streets I know there are some exceptions.  But  its the dealers who order extra I can still get a VL big boy today just to name one  so why do I have to hurry to my local dealer and preorder if I want a ESE set now I can order one or I can wait until the summer when dealers who have not sold there sets are ready to deal and I know people will say that they will be gone and I say I can find on here for sale it may have been ran but in great shape it will be cheaper then buying a new one

So, who was it that forced you to order all that stuff?

You and everyone on this forum have always contributed in some positive way in causing me to purchase more train stuff.

For example, a few years back when Allan Miller of OGR threw in his opinion of the new MTH PS3 LIRR RS-1, it was his review/description of how great the Alco engine sounds were that tipped the iceberg and resulted in my purchase of that engine.

Now just multiply that many times and many instances with other forum members...yes David you as well, and the money flows down river like water!

I am convinced that the money you spend on model trains brings enjoyment of such a unique type in so many ways, that it is even healthy, i.e. relieves stress, lowers blood pressure etc etc. In fact, about three weeks ago for some odd reason my heart was racing (anxiety?) and after an hour of suffering I went upstairs and worked on my layout. Done! Gone! I felt so good I ordered a pizza!

Except when my DCS handheld goes on the fritz though...

David,

Thanks for starting this thread discussion-- I agree that it is always hard to balance the "wants" VS "my budget"; so I have to try and psych myself into understanding that this truly is the "golden era" of O-Gauge trains. And that I need to balance what I can afford and do the best in narrowing-down what my "wants" are. I am not sure if I am articulating myself using the right words-- but your posting help me think more about the "internal conflicts". I think everyone is grateful that we have so much choice of products. Who could have dreamed back in the 1950's, when I was introduced to my 1st Lionel train, that we would have so many manufacturers delivering so much product???

I am grateful

But what happens when you wait for a something that sells out and nobody has extras, your SOL and if you do want one youre gonna have to pay through the nose for it

As an example, look at the prices that some of the forum sponsors are asking for the extra ES44AC's that they ordered.  In many cases they are asking more than $100 over what I paid by pre-ordering.

If a particular BTO item turns out to be very popular, it's like Matt says...you're either SOL or will have to pay a substantial premium.

I made that mistake with the Daylight Cab Forward.  I didn't pre-order and then decided I wanted one.  It took awhile to find one, and I had to pay a premium over the pre-order pricing.
