Can someone tell me what a Atlas adjust-A-coupler is and what is its application?

Those where Atlas O company's attempt to compete with Kadee O Scale (#805) couplers, but still have a truck mounted coupler. They didn't work very well and kept breaking, and eventually Atlas dropped those original "Adjust-A-Coupler" devices from their freight car line (they used to package a pair in each Master Line freight car).
After too many of them broke, I finally removed them all and threw them in the trash (mine where all body mounted). I currently have all my rolling stock equipped with Kadee #805 couplers, but have recently purchased some of the new Kadee 700 series O Scale "E" Type couplers.
The adjustment part could be adjusted in/out and up/down. It was not an easy adjustment, but doable. The trucks had to be taken apart to insert the assembly.
The issue I had was the Atlas spring was too strong and wouldn't allow for easy coupling. Using a Kadee spring was an easy fix. I heard Atlas came out with softer springs.
I never had one break, but I usually pulled no more than a 10-car train.
I have since removed them, but still have a couple of Atlas couplers modified to fit inside Kadee and Weaver boxes.
Best thing Atlas and the others could do is to add pads for mounting Kadee coupler boxes and let Kadee do the rest. Sure would make it easier on us 3RS and 2-rail folks while not really creating a fuss for the regular 3-rail crowd as it wouldn't interfere with anything and not be very noticeable.
They are junk, don't waste your time. Hot Water warned me about them last year and I tried them anyway. Ended up pulling them all off and going Kadee
