Here's the real highlights...

Atlas is finally going to do another run of the Alco C424's, with Proto 3, 3 rail and 2 rail.  The roads will be  EL. D&H. D-L, CP, TP&W, M&E.

Also, I'be been after the FOREVER, to do 75' centerbeam flat cars..the ones u see everywhere hauling lumber and sheetrock.  These will be the 1st ones ever done in full O scale size.   MTH did these once before, but they were shrunk down versions, not scale size.

And a new box car...The PS 5344 Box car.  This is "modern"  1970's thru 1990's  50' box car.  There are still many of them in service today.   Similar to the ACF and FMC 50' box cars.

Wow. I’m so glad to see the Morristown and Erie Alco back. I got the 2 rail with QSI sound when it was first released years ago. It’s super hard to find today, so now I can get the second road number.  I assume that since this is a 2 rail DCS engine that it can also run on 3 rail track with the pickup rollers installed.  Is that correct?  Also, how do I select a road number to order on your website.

All of the C424's are available in 3 rail with DCS,   as well as 2 rail with DCS and DCC.  If you are running 3 rail, u can buy a 3 rail engine.

Thanks for the info. My specific question was about operating 2 rail models on a 3 rail scale layout. With the MTH 2 rail engines 3 2 system you could add pickup rollers and then operate them off the center rail. Does Atlas have this option now that they’re using DCS?

Thanks!   I hope they do.  The catalog says the ES44s have the 3 2 conversion feature. However, the Alcos don’t list it. Since the Alcos are original atlas and not MTH I have no idea if they would include this feature.  

Its always been possible with the vertical can motor drive Atlas diesels to convert them, you just need the parts department and some know how to do it.

The truck castings will have the center post hole for the pickup roller. If the 2 rail loco has the bronze wipers, you unscrew the wiper, remove the plastic insulating bucket and retaining plate, and replace it with the roller and its insulating bucket. The catch here is that only one side is grounded (usually its the opposing sides of the trucks so you'd have both rails covered by a truck each), unless you replace the insulated side wheels.

If the 2 rail loco has the pin plungers on the wheels, then the roller hole is left empty, you'll need the hardware, the insulator and the roller. The roller would need to be wired in, leaving the truck itself and the insulated wheels wired as is, but tied together as a double sided ground.

I'm not sure if they still use the bronze wipers. The more recent 2 rail stuff seems to come with the sprung plungers, which are not as reliable over time, unfortunately.

If you actually want 3 rail wheels, the axles drop out individually and you'd need the correct set of traction tire and non-traction tired axles.  

I dont see why these would be different aside form the electronics package, but it would certainly be worthwhile to get a hold of someone at Atlas to confirm that there will be parts available to do this. My guess is you wouldnt be the only one wanting to try it if the option was possible.

Special runs....  Engines are too expensive and min order qty too high for what I can handle.   Average Atlas special run engine outlay is 20K+, and you have to sell 40 pcs to break even.  If u think its easy to sell 40 engines at more or less 600 each, try it some time.

Centerbeam flat cars and the PS5344, Atlas does not want to do any special runs on 1st run of new tooling items.

That leaves the 2 bay airslides (which I like, but, honestly not a very popular car),  the all-door box cars (kind of a flash-in-the-pan in RR use), and the 52'6" mill gondolas.  I was thinking of asking to do a gondola, but again, my experience has been that ppl just dont want to buy 50' gondolas that much.  Generally, I think I'd sell 30 or 40 pieces, which would be a netloss of a couple thousand dollars.  Im still mulling over a few road names...should know if we will do anything by monday...

Ive been pushing for Atlas to do centerbeams for a while.    The MTH ones are undersize and not very detailed.   With Atlas's recent success with larger modern day freight cars , I thought these were a no- brainer.  You see them everywhere in the real world today, yet no one has ever done a scale size one one in O gaude before.
