Forgive me if this is in the wrong place or mentioned before, I tried searching but couldnt find exactly what I was looking for...

I have a PS2 5V Rail King Southern Crescent steamer and the board is flaky from what the fine folks over and Hennings have said. It KINDA responds to their TIU but not really. It DOES have a BCR battery in it. In searching, the easiest upgrade is to upgrade to a PS32 stacker board. MTH instructions say I need to program it using a TIU. I do not have a TIU. Will the new WTIUs starting to hit the stores allow me to program the locomotive?

I love the look of the Rail King but I also wouldn't mind a TMCC "Mountain" version of the Southern steamer. The $800-1000 price tag kinda stinks though. Not sure if I should just try to sell this Rail King for parts and save up for a Mountain or if its worth upgrading it.

The end goal is for the steamer to easily pull the 6 K-Line Heavyweight Southern passenger cars that I have as I love them and the smaller Southern steamers I have cannot pull them.

I have the Base3 unit already and looking at the WTIU.

Thanks in advance to all the smarter people on there.

To answer your question: Yes, the new TIU will allow you to program the engine once the new board is installed. I have done this upgrade. It is not "easy" if you are unfamiliar. Can it be done? Yes! The PS3/2 comes with good instructions. I agree that this steamer is a good one! I would look into having a qualified tech do the upgrade for you and enjoy your engine. My 2 cents

It's pretty simple to put the PS32 board in, you'll also want the heatsink kit and a matching 4 ohm speaker.

In order to have a permanent name, you do need to have an ASC program it.  The consumer Loader program doesn't allow you to add a permanent name. I'm surprised that the boys at the store didn't tell you they could do that.  In truth, most MTH stuff like that that comes in I'll probably end up seeing on my bench.
