I'm using an old lap top to try and back up my remote. I've installed the loader on the lap top. I'm connecting from the lap top to one of my TIU's (I have three) with a USB cable; then remote to the TIU with a phone handset cable. I open the loader, identify where I want to save and hit "start"... I get searching for COM 1 or COM3. I've repeated many times including going to loaders OPTION and changing search settings. Twice when plugging USB in the lap top said I needed drivers... the "fix conputer guys/store" says it's referencing drivers on the TIU.... and to go to MTH to downlaod drivers... this sounds very wrong to me. Logistics is an issue if the solution is to try to replicate the lap top driver error and going forward with WIZARD getting the drivers for windows via the internet. My interent/router connection is upstairs... TIU's in the basement.... Help!!!! Thank you Rick

This may or may not be related to your problem.
I had the same problem for months until I discovered the phone jack in the remote was bad and not making a complete connection. The jack was replaced and now it all works as described.
I replaced the phone jack.... same problem. OPTIONS search for TIU was successful (using serial cable)... but still getting "hard time finding COM 1) when "starting" backup.... (NOTE: this was using a serial cable which gave me good result searching via OPTIONS; USB cable didn't work in OPTIONS search or backup search.)
i had this problem and finally found out that my remote was at software rev 4.20 while the TIU was at rev 3.10 - upgraded the TIU and everything works fine
Make absolutely sure of teh following:
- The phone cable must be 4-conductor
- There are no bent pins in either the jack on the TIU or the one on the remote
- Before clicking on START, you must first press on the remote:
Menu/System/Remote Setup/Backup-Restore/Backup Remote to PC
I'm all set... I backed up the remote and then uploaded all to a 2nd remote. I'm not sure what I finally did to make it all work. It may very well have been the handset cable. Thank you all. Hey Barry.... I use your book so much some pages are starting to fallout....LOL What a great asset.

Hello Kerrigan, Please tell us where you got the replacement phone jack to replace the one in the remote. Radio Shack? MTH ? Part number ? Thanks Bob.
the phone cord I used was borrowed from the hand set to base phone on my desk.
from radio shack web stie: 304-007SL 7 feet four wire 99cents page 5 via a search for "Phone cords".....
I got one from a guy on this list, but then MTH offered to fix it for me, so I sent it to them and now it works great.
