Hi guys !! I have an MTH pennsy SW 8 proto 1 switcher !!The engine quit working so I had the boards replaced and engine was returned with MTH green recharge battery!! back in June I hosted TCA home layout tour one evening!! A few days prior to tour I checked this engine to make sure it was running perfectly To my dismay the engine was dead !! I quickly went out and bought the $10.00 energizer lithium battery ( guaranteed for 10 years ) put it in switcher and everything worked fine during the TCA TOUR !! the next week the battery was dead again ??? I powered engine up for 5 minutes and it started to work again ?? This battery goes dead on a weekly basis !! I reinstalled a BCR last nite and let engine sit @ 20volts for 10 min and nothing happened ?? Can BCR go BAD ?? I reinstall Energizer battery and after about 6-8 minutes all the sounds returned back to normal ?? any ideas as to what is going on ?? Thanks Gary

Back when I was running earlier Proto systems, I installed BCR's in everything. They should only need to charge up for a minute or so. Perhaps, your charging circuit is bad. I'd start by checking the actual connection to the BCR/battery. I recently noticed that I have one that is beginning to separate on the positive side.
Hey thanks for the reply !! where do I find the charging circuit ??

Trace the wires from the 9V battery plug back to the board it's attached to. And therein lies your charging circuit.
Do you have to replace entire board or is this something that plugs into the board?? Thanks
Your symptoms suggest the charging circuit is bad on the board. Sadly, for 5V boards, this is usually a death sentence for the board as repair is usually not possible. The fact that it kills the batteries quickly and also a BCR doesn't work all point to the charging circuit as the culprit.
