Hello all!

I upgraded to a new TIU and a remote 6.0 at Christmas.

I have been having issues with the remote since I started using it.

I noticed when scrolling the thumbwheel for speed setting, it would not react or it would display a lower speed, even if I was increasing speed.

Start ups would take long, sometimes not work. Switch function would not work or be delayed. Many Out of range messages even though I was right next to the TIU. I thought maybe the batteries wore down very fast so I put new ones in. That seemed to solve it, but only for a brief time, then all the issues reappeared.

I then took those batteries out, installed them in my old remote, which is running 2.0 and gave it a try.

Everything works perfect, instant start up, all commands react and no problem scrolling for speed.

Did I just get a defective remote?

  Thanks,

                 Jack

Jack,

To things:

  • You state that your other remote that works fine is using DCS 2.0. If your new remote is using DCS 6.0, as you also state, that's very possibly your problem.
  • If the remote and TIU are both at DCS 6.0, connect the remote to the TIU's Remote Input port with a curly, 4-conductor telephone cable and see if things improve.

Jack,

As George stated, you most likely need to reseat the transceiver board in the remote≥ It can become dislodged due to rough handling during shipping.

From page 161-162 of The DCS Companion 3rd Edition:

Opening the DCS Remote can be extremely difficult and can cause problems with the DCS Remote! You should consider having this done by an authorized MTH service center!

  • Open the battery compartment door on the back of the DCS Remote and remove the batteries.
  • Remove the Phillips head screw inside the battery compartment.
  • Before opening the DCS Remote's case, note that when the DCS Remote is opened, there will still be a black wire connecting the two halves of its case.
  • Begin to separate the two halves of the DCS Remote's case by pushing outwards from inside the battery compartment while squeezing the bottom portion of the top of the DCS Remote. This requires considerable patience, particularly when opening a DCS remote's case for the first time.
  • Once the bottom of the shell begins to separate, gently continue to separate the two halves of the case and open the DCS Remote like a book, taking care not to damage the wire connecting the two halves of the case.
  • The transceiver board is located at the top of the DCS Remote behind the LCD screen. Do not under any circumstances lift up on the transceiver board or black wire!
  • Press down gently on the transceiver board to reseat it.
  • Place a piece of soft, nonconductive spongy material on top of the transceiver board so that it will hold the board in place when the DCS Remote is reassembled.
  • Carefully line up the two halves of the case and gently but firmly snap them back together.
  • Replace the Phillips head screw, the batteries and the battery compartment door.

All systems firing on all cylinders!

Took the remote apart and sure enough, the board was not set all the way in place.

I took my old remote to the MTH booth at the train show today and had it updated to 6.1,so now I have 2 working remotes.

Andy the MTH Rep laughed when he saw my remote had 2.0.

Thanks again!
