Steve, the blue one is a Nicad, can’t see what the other is, but it may be a NiMh? I don’t think they’re putting LiPos in trains from the factory but I could be wrong.
They are electrically equivalent.
The green AAA batteries were used in some early PS-2 units and have the same ratings as the the blue ones. They contain 2 1.5 volt rechargeable batteries.
Thanks guys. The green one is dead, but wanted to make sure they were compatible before using the larger blue one.

The HFR batteries are most likely a better performing battery. It would be my guess that they are NiMh.
I found a Tenergy battery co. document on the HFR type of battery. (attached)
Different disposal issues and definitely do not toss them into a fire.

MTH uses the smaller one in engines that the larger blue may not fit. I have found the smaller AAA do not have the same life length as the AA. Make sense since there is less chemical energy available. G
It was a tight fit, but the larger battery fit under the boiler of the 392.
