I have a premier MTH challenger that has a low battery. I don’t remember the product no. Would the battery be located in the tender?

Yes.

Look for a charging jack in the tender. No jack or a round one will use the 8.4 volt (9v style) NiMh battery. A two pin jack will use the AA 2.4 volt battery pack.
Some of the older ones don’t have a charging port.

That's what I said. "No jack or a round one"
Thanks Jon G. I did not know how to differentiate unless you opened it up.
You can also look up the locomotive on the MTH site and check the battery type in the User's Manual.

Sometimes that is not accurate especially on model changes. But it is rare for the battery to be in the engine. There are a few models but I can't remember which. Maybe the early Triplex? G

One exception with the charging port is the 2004 production K-4 item 20-3126-1. I bought this engine when new and just last week replaced the batteries. It has no charging port but has a three volt board. It also uses 2 rechargeable AA Batteries instead of the double AA Battery pack. 2004 production models could go either way as to what board it had in it.
