1. Verrazano
2. Goethals
3. I-78 across Jersey into PA.
4. At Allentown pick up I-83 and take it to Harrisburg, crossing the Susquehanna and then York.
it may not be the best, but I think it's the easiest firm where you are starting from.

Thanks Peter, Thats what my old man told me as well but mapquest has me going through Philly and im not so happy about that
If it were me, I'd take the 78 from Newark to just before Harrisburg, and then 83 (Via 283) down to York.
Edit: oops. Peter beat me to it.
depends on what time you leave from brooklyn,
figure about 45 minutes to 1 hour to hit jersey,
about 2 hours on 78 west in jersey to hit pa,
option 1- 78 west to exit 29, route 61 south to route 222 south to route 30 west to york.
option 2- 78 west to 81 south to 83 south to york.
either way you are looking at 4-5 hours, police are out and about in full force for speeding and agressive drivers, also DO NOT speed into a construction zone, they are nailing EVERYONE that does.
they don't bother with me doing 66-67 in my 18 wheeler
option 1 has road construction on 78 west at mm 44 to 42, route 61 south at route 222.
option 2 has road construction on 78 west at mm 44 to 42, I83 interchange with route 581 just west of harrisburg where I83 heads south to york.
Peter and Nicole have it right.
I've done it 50 times or so, coming from Eastern LI, and I like this way:
Jersey TPK Exit 6
PA TPK Exit 286
Route 222 South
Route 30 West
Takes about 3.5 hours from the GWB.
Thanks Peter, Thats what my old man told me as well but mapquest has me going through Philly and im not so happy about that
Try to stay out of Philadelphia because of the traffic and possibility of missing your exit.
Don't know the area that well anymore near New York but I-83 should take you from southern New York state right into York PA.

Goethals Bridge to I-78? The Goethals does not hit I-78. That means doubling back North on the Jersey Turnpike?
Or I-278 across SI to 440 West Shore Expressway South to Outerbridge Crossing to 287 and up to I-78.
Be sure to make use of the Google maps traffic feature before you leave.
MrNasbisco's route via Staten Island, the Outerbridge and 287 sounds good - stop and pick me up from Bay Ridge on the way! Oh, I'm working through Saturday. Never mind. That is the way I would go, though.

Goethals bride to NJ turnpike and follow Arthurs directions..
Amuse me. What are the tolls now for a trip like this.
Choo-Choo Mike -
Depends on whether it's cash or E-ZPass, and what state/authority issued the E-ZPass. Cash is $15 for the Verrazano, $10.66 E-ZPass (though I think I get dinged for the cash toll because my pass was issued by Maryland). Collected westbound only.
Outerbridge/Goethals are $13 cash, and $9 or $11 E-ZPass, off-peak and peak. Collected eastbound only. All the above are for passenger cars.

Plus there is a bridge toll to get out of NJ into PA.
As my bumper sticker reads 'Madness takes its toll. Please have exact change.'
Thanks, Nicole - knew there was one on I-80, but couldn't remember about I-78.
David
I did it every year from staten island for a long while This is the best
Verrazano
Goethels
NJ Tpke south
Exit 6 to Pennsy Tpke
Pennsy Tpke to route 222 south
Rte 22 south to rte 30 west
Exit at Carlyle ave make left to fairgrounds
You are going to the train Mecca Tolls mean nothing
WOW ! Last time I drove over the Verrazano it was like 7 bucks.
Don't they have tolls on the Jersey and Pennsy Tpkes?

Sorry but there is no I-83 outside or around Allentown. I-83 starts in Harrisburg, Pa. You will need to take I-78 to I-81 [just outside of Hershey] then to I-83.
I use to live on Staten Island nd now live in New Jersey close to the outerbridge and rt440.
When I go to york I always go the route arthur and blue line go.
I actually get on the NJ turnpike at exit 9 and left at 5:30 am and arrived at the yellow hall at 741:am.
Forget about taking 1-78 and heading to harrisburg….3 and a half hours????
forget about it.
