Just so you know, I have ordered one, I'm glad they have the coils and if I had a choice I would pick coils on the front, but truth be told, I'd of ordered one even if they didn't have the coils because the Big Boy, no matter the era, is my favorite locomotive.
Here's an idea - A small redesign to make the radiators optional. They could be included in a separate baggie in the box and left up to the owner to install or not. Problem solved, everyone's happy!
There would then be a raft of indignant purchasers complaining that 'For this money, you think they could have fitted the radiators! ' Nice idea though Nick.
There will always be one, indeed Seriously though this has to be the best solution apart from offering an entire separate sale "modernized" pilot. Out of the box you basically get two models in one. It's the same concept as Lionel's Empire State Express Hudson where they included removable side skirts to give the owner a choice of early or late life appearance.
Chris, thanks for doing the poll! Lionel said they wouldn't do anything different anyway. I'll wait for the next version.
Radiators! We don't need no stinking radiators!

LOL, hilarious!
Now I'm getting hungry

I have ordered one, I pay Brian at Legacy a few hundred a month so I do not get clobbered when it hits the Streets.
Had to vote for the radiators because my Lionel Legacy BB 4012 and my L-AF 4014 both have them. Voted for the Coke and fries because I'm hungry.
All of the excitment over the new VL BB prompted me to run my Lionel Legacy BB, which is a nifty piece in its own right. I was impressed all over again and one can appreciate why those ordering a newly offered VL version have elevated anticipations. Fortunately, I can sit this one out.
Have fun!

Keep that up and you'll be somewhat overpaid by the time the thing gets released.
Without Radiator
Wilson after-cooler radiator (behind pilot/ air compressor shield) originally designed for the Challenger and eventually adapted to the Big Boy to replace the less efficient horizontal piping.

Actually the fined type cooling coils, designed by Westinghouse, were MORE efficient than the Wilson Radiators. However, the Westinghouse fined coils were a LOT more expensive to replace, after the condensation froze inside, than the replacement Wilson radiators.

No problem, I guaranty that money will be used up in a few weeks, I got a few more biggies right behind and in front of it. My last shot at it before I retire in less then a year.

noted... the basic point being they all had some radiator (air cooling) system.
OK lets vote about the Radiators on the Big Boy
Might want to add the pictures so people can see what they are voting on....
Pictures are worth a thousand words.

I'm waiting for the next MTH release. Of course, like you, if the "boss" finds out I might get brained with it.
Were the fries and the coke installed in the front near the headlight. And were they Westinghouse or Wilson fries?
With rads...and french fries and a burger and a beer...thx Lionel

I for one, am just plain sick of Big Boy discussions of any form. What else is there to discuss on it? Nevermind ...shouldn't have even asked that question.
I dunno, I find it a rather refreshing break from the otherwise constant recycling of threads about NYC Hudsons and Pennsy GG1s.
I don't believe its refreshing at all. Now a large cherry coke with fries and blowdown sounds delightful.

No problem here either, John! Get 'em while the gettin's good!

MSRP on the PS/2 conversion kit is $180, that pales in comparison with the price of the Big Boy, go for it.
At this price, those extortionists at Lionel should throw in two sodas and two large
fries.

But, I want a chili dog instead.
"But, I want a chili dog instead."
Sorry, but if we give you a chili dog, we'll have to give some philistine
a root beer. There have to be limits.

No Big Boy for you! (channeling the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld--not sure that made it over to Utrecht).
