Hey all,

I finally took the plunge a few weeks ago and started converting my fleet to Kadee. Rode up to Legacy Station one weekend and got the coupler packs, along with the screws, and so far it's been smooth sailing except for the cars without the Kadee pads (Looking at you, Lionel!) I've got a tender converted, most all of my Atlas and Weaver stock has been converted, and next will be my scale milk cars and my Lionel Heavyweights. Wanted to throw out a big thank you to everyone involved in the pages upon pages of Kadee conversions. I admit, I am still lost when it comes to styrene spacer sizes and have not ordered any yet...but something that has worked magnificently is the Weaver coupler plastic. Some of the Weaver cars came with dummy couplers, and I've been cutting off the coupler bolster mount so the cars would still ride at their correct height. Those straight, leftover pieces of plastic make GREAT spacers. I also have been using washers for spacers, and they're not visible since they're black.

The only drawback is that it feels like I've kinda taken the magic out of our trains, but I keep coming back to how much better the couplers look, how close they are together now, etc. Once you go Kadee you start noticing smaller scale details that'll bug you if they aren't right...build dates, non prototypical schemes, etc...now to upgrade my shelf layout to O72 from O54 so that I can do the conversion on my Lionel heavyweights...they are the late 90's release that were released alongside the Commodore Vanderbilt heavyweights. I think I'm going to mount them to the coupler arm and leave them truck mounted vs going frame mounted on them; I can't figure out how ti do that, so the truck mount seems my most logical outcome.

Sorry for the long winded post! One thing I have learned for sure, though-once you go Kadee, it's game over for the lobster claws.

I think I’ve watched every one of yours and Laidoffsick’s videos on YouTube, and a big thanks to both of you for taking the time to put all of this together for us.

I’m starting to see more and more adopters of Kadee and I remember reading through all of that one night telling myself “I’ll never do that, I don’t have the patience and it looks too complicated….”

2 weeks later I bought my first few sets and I haven’t looked back. I’m not a scale modeler by any means, we have a shelf layout that goes around my oldest daughters room, with O54 curves. Trainz has several bundles of O72 for $50 or less right now, complete circles, so that’s going to be my next project.

Any advice on heavyweights and Kadees? I know I’ll be fine with O72 but I’m not sure where to start as far as mounting and then smaller diaphragms, the diaphragms that came with my Weaver NYC 60’ RPO would be perfect.

James, as your finding out this becomes addictive. Weavers are by far the easiest to convert. Generally I go with the washer route. You can get blackened washers in quantity from Microfasteners. As well as any other small hardware you need. I usually just add enough washers for wheel clearance. Then shim the coupler from there.

On their 40 ft. Flat cars and Gondolas. You can get the height much more prototypical by making a small mod. To the chassis. Remove one rib that can’t be seen and the truck can now mount with maybe just one thin washer. The coupler pocket now looks like it should. The pics. show the after and before.

I have been blessed with forcing my self to learn CAD software and 3D print a lot of spacers, that I’ve forced myself to use existing holes or features that will align the Kadee box in the exact spot to get the coupler to look right and work reliably.  These include Lionel PS-1 and round top boxcars, Lionel and Atlas steel reefers, Lionel milk cars, double door boxcars, die cast 2-bay and 4-bay hoppers and scale stock cars. A quick search on the forum will point you in the direction of how to convert them.

Thanks!

- Mario

There are a couple files about couplers on OGR 3d Project Catalog under the category of upgrades. But there are no files for Kadee shims. It would be great if you could add your files to the catalog.

You can access the 3d files with a digital subscription, and more importantly, you can post your original files for others to easilly find and use. I think there are plenty of good reasons to subscribe, but anyone with O gauge equipment and a 3d printer, then a subscription becomes the best decision you can make. (I am not on the OGR staff, but we all benefit with members sharing their 3d print files)

Now... If there are any more questions or comments about 3d printing, maybe the best place to post them is here: ogrforum 3d printing discussion
