I finally purchased a Lionel Lighthouse to be one of the focal points on my layout, the (what else?) Lighthouse Point Rail Road.

Now that I have it unpacked and sitting in its projected location on the layout, I'm trying to figure out how to blend its base in with the layout.  I'm at a total loss other than a "gravel path" of some sort from the road crossing to the lighthouse might be a good start.  (The ballast on the mainline was purchased from Brennan's Better Ballast.)  Another idea is to line that gravel path with some of the Department 56 "stone walls" like I used to separate the "railfan campground" from the tracks (see last photo), but those walls may be a bit too tall for the lighthouse area.

Does anyone have any photos to share on how they successfully blended the base into the overall scene?

If not, I'm open to any ideas.

Thank you!

Pat, I would build up the area around the perimeter of the base with ceiling tile. The right of way would then appear to skirt a hillside. If the base is stiil above the top of the tile then I would use True Scene Fusion Fiber to smooth out the transition. I'm assuming your "water" is off the layout. Perhaps, you could model a rocky shoreline along the corner edges of your layout.

I'd make a base that filled that corner .then using sculpta mold make some humps to simulate sand dunes feathering them to the light house base. mask off the light house and use Val-Spar textured paint in sandstone to give me a base. 50/50 white glue and real sand over my sandstone base. You could then use some foliage to simulate sand spurs and sea oates.

I also have a lighthouse and it will be a main focal point of my layout.  I haven't done much scenery on my layout yet but my plan is to have the base sitting on 1 inch foam.  I will then have "sand" surround the the right side and back of the base, to make a beach.  The left side will be to the open water that leads to a channel to my harbor.

It is hard to explain but will look very typical of great lakes light houses her in Michigan.  I plan on having this one of my frist areas to complete on my layout and will show some photos of my progress.
