The combine set same number are not as bright, I am running 18 volts with a mth Z-4000 mth transformer, when I get 16 volts the

lights look like the combine set when I push 18 volts they get bright. Bright enough too make the roof top warm I own several sets

The original five-car set (4021) came out in late 1998.  The extra two-car set (20-4121) came out in late 1999.  Maybe a year made a difference in the way lighting was done.  Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about (always an option ). In any case, I am sure others will be able to help.  One other question:  Are you sure the two-car set is 20-4121?  Could it be a match, but a later version of the Blue Comet?

That is correct.  The five-car set came out in 1998, and the two-car set came out in 1999.  I'm not sure why one year would make a difference in the lighting, but anything is possible.  If there are 14 volt bulbs in your cars, they would definitely be very bright at 18 volts; and they would not last long.  Good luck!  Those are beautiful cars.
