God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood brings chills to my spine. I love it. And I missed hearing it. I look forward to it.
Stu
We sing that in my class every year! My all time favorite.
Bob
I Agree, Bring Back God Bless The USA by Lee Greenwood! I missed hearing it, too, and also never heard that song that replaced it which seemed to go on and on.

I perform country music for senior centers, assisted living, etc. here and around
central Jersey. I have recorded 4 CDs in Tennessee and one of them has "God bless
the USA" on them. I approached the Eastern division about playing my version at York
and was flatly turned down. I was told if they did that, they would have to do it for everyone. Really? how many other TCA members have recorded this? I thought it would
be a nice gesture as a fellow TCA member, but they did not! Anyhow, I agree with this post. If not me, bring back Lee! Mike
What was played on Friday morning in my opinion was NOT GOOD. Kate Smith would have been much better.
Also I would sure like to see them give Mike (K-Liner) at least the chance to preview his recorded version. After all, he is a TCA member. Why not recognize one of our own.
I totally agree with other posters. The Lee Greenwood "God Bless the USA" was sorely missed. [Not trying to hijack the thread, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out a few years ago that Lee also wrote a "God Bless You Canada" song - how appropriate given the events in Ottawa yesterday.]
...also never heard that song that replaced it which seemed to go on and on.

Indeed! Would not have been on my list of "top ten patriotic songs," that's for sure.
Wow I guess we found the next thing to gripe about at York.
Okay, now I'm curious. I was at the Legacy users' group meeting/breakfast and missed the song. Does someone know the title and artist?
(added) Also, I noticed they did not play any song for Thursday's opening.
Agreed.
It was also sort of odd that when an announcement was made regarding the new song, they did not wish to say what it was! Instead you had to go to the registration desk to find out.
I think most table holders and buyers in my general vicinity at the time that announcement was made agreed they should go back to Lee Greenwood.

Ron:
There indeed was a patriotic song played to start the Meet on Thursday. It was very appropriate. Friday, not so good.
(added) Also, I noticed they did not play any song for Thursday's opening.
Ron: Are you sure? I'm 99.99% sure they played the National Anthem (Star Spangled Banner) at Thursday's 12 noon opening.
Bill
I don't care what they do with the opening music, but please, PLEASE get rid of that sappy and silly "Happy Trails To You" at the end of the show!
That was cute...in 1959.
My vote is to bring back Kate Smith, her version always give me chills!!

Yes, they did!

I was in the Orange Hall front section near the food counter (right side looking towards the hall) and did not hear it. I was standing in line and all of a sudden people were being let into the hall. I would have shown respect for the National Anthem had I heard it. Maybe the sound system was out in that area, or maybe I'm just getting old

Did you hear it, Roy Rogers just turned over in his grave!
Hi Ho Silver!!
Ok, I'm glad I'm not crazy. I was also in the Orange Hall lobby prior to Thursday's opening and didn't hear the anthem. We were talking with people and I was waiting for it, then everyone started rushing into the hall.
I was outside the Orange hall Thursday and did indeed hear the SSB.
Brian,
Thanks, now I feel a little better. Must have been a sound system issue in the lobby. I guess Marty does not believe us.
Or maybe, just maybe, I was just stating that I did hear it And not casting doubt on others experience.
I rather hear a contemporary version of our National Anthem that most folks won't consider disrespectful.
But its no big deal.
I really like Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA". I did not hear the song used Friday morning so I can't comment on it, but from the above posts it sounded like a terrible choice. There are other good patriotic songs available, I wonder why they chose the one they did? Local talent? A relative of the TCA-ED president? It would be interesting to know why.
Just heard from Lee Greenwood, he is refusing to join the TCA! :-)

They should play the Van Halen version,
Yeah, I know "Van who...?"
As for a contemporary version of The Star Spangled Banner good luck getting anything like this played at York.
Would be different tho.
Jerry
I agree that the Friday morning opening song was rather unremarkable. I remember listening to it, but for the life of me, I can't remember much more about it than, at the time, I was wishing it was Lee Greenwood's song.
As for contemporary versions of The Star Spangled Banner, I like this one (by Madison Rising) the best:
Would be really cool to hear that at York!
Andy
I'm one of the growing number of "graybeards" and I like the closing "Happy Trails". It gives my wife and me a spiritual lift to perhaps an otherwise "less-tha-exceptional" sales event. Also, Kate Smith and/or Lee Greenwood for a strong beginning to the day.
Wally
Since we are all a bunch of old farts anyway: How about the Star Spangled Banner by Jimi Hendrix?
Andy, I like that version more then the straight up guitar versions, it would be cool to hear that at York.
As for Hendrix, he may have been a guitar master but his version of the anthem is a little too off beat even for my taste. Sounds like he forgot what he was playing for a while and then remembered it towards the end.

If we would like the TCA Eastern Division to consider changing the York Meet closing song, we need to offer some suggested replacements to them. My suggestion would be “Homeward Bound” by Simon & Garfunkel. And its lyrics even start out with a train reference! Anybody else have other suggestions?
But to put this entire thread into perspective, we are very lucky that we live in a country with free enterprise that allows events such as swap meets and not a government-controlled economy, that we have the freedom to travel and can choose to either attend or not attend these kind of events, and also that the Eastern Division takes the time to honor our country and those who fought for that freedom and our way of life.
It is obviously the Eastern Division’s “ballgame” and they get to decide what songs to play at the Meet daily opening and closing times. But it’s encouraging that they have shown a willingness to make improvements the last few years as evidenced by the relaxation on cell phone use, etc. so there might be some hope! Having run a few local meets and one national convention, I’m aware of what it takes to run a small or modest-sized show so producing such a large show as the York Meet must be quite an undertaking. To repeat what others have posted, thank you Eastern Division for such a good job even if we have some minor gripes about the daily opening and closing songs!
Having said all that, I still would prefer that they bring back Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” as the opening song on Friday at York!

When soundtracks are created they open the creators soul to the world to be judged. When a pen is set to paper the vocals are created. As the vocals flow, the creators heart is opened for the world to walk on.
A simple song that had meaning in yester-years has just as much meaning today.
God's Blessings,
"Pappy"
I did not hear anything played before the Thursday opening. I was in the main Orange Hall lobby, chatting with a friend, from about 11:45, and of a sudden, the portals were swung wide to allow entrance.

They should play instead Carol Burnett's "I'm so glad we had this time together ..."
And while they are at it, maybe at the end of the day on Thursday and Friday they should play "Tomorrow" from the musical "Annie"...
Andy
So what was the song they did play? Name anyone?
quote:And while they are at it, maybe at the end of the day on Thursday and Friday they should play "Tomorrow" from the musical "Annie"...
Well, if I heard "Tomorrow" belching from the PA system, I'd sure depart in a hurry. There is something about that song..,..,....
