I'm happy to report that Thursday At York featured steady traffic and brisk sales (at least at my humble table in Red Hall). I started with a sale to a neighboring tableholder at noon And kept a steady pace until about 4 PM. My goal for the meet was to net enough proceeds to pay for a pile of Ross products to complete a layout expansion project (under table staging yard). I did so well that I was able to march right out of Red at the new closing time and head directly to the Ross booth in Orange. Switches are already in the trainroom!  

 

Hoping today is just as good. Maybe I can raise enough funds to purchase a standard gauge set I saw at Arno Baar's table?!?

 

I hope everyone is having a good meet and I look forward to talking with more collectors and operators today. If you're at the meet, stop by Red Hall Row C-21-22 and say hello. Maybe I have an item you need.

Glad to read sales were brisk in your hall.  Other posts seem to report things have been slow.  Maybe none of them went into the hall you are in.  Thank you for the report.

I'm sure it's just a matter of perspective. For every person who thinks things are going well you can find one who views the meet as slow. One thing that has helped me is realistic pricing. Most of what I've sold so far is definitely not high grade collector stuff, and I've priced it accordingly. On the other hand, a gentleman at the table behind me sold a rather "minty" boxed AF standard gauge freight set today for just south of $6k. I heard  the buyer rather loudly declare that he had no intention of ever running the set. 

 

It all depends on many factors. I'm just thrilled because my sales have been good enough to allow me to purchase a couple of things without laying out any additional cash.

yes I would have to agree.......i found not much "stalled traffic" in the aisles.   There was a great amount of people, but not "sandwiched/crammed aisles" as in say 2007 when I went to my first York.

   It seemed weird that this York didnt seem too crowded given that I took the shuttle around 3 o; clock and there were cars parked EVERYWHERE.  Perhaps the OGR Grandstand meet was too account for this light crowd at times.

  I will say that many sellers were really willing to wheel n deal.

 

 

After attending 30+ years of train shows as both buyer and seller, I've realized that total attendance is not always an accurate barometer of total sales $$$. It depends on what you are selling.

 

The guys who are serious buyers will be there. Big ticket items will sell if they are priced reasonably. Show attendance could drop by a third or more and those guys will still be there buying engines.

 

On the other hand, if you are selling small items, detail parts, videos, magazines, etc., then sales will be more dependent on the total number of people through the door.

 

York is still the best venue IMO for selling your quality, choice items and will continue to be such in the foreseeable future even if attendance drops over the years.
