So I need a bulkhead flat car. I am looking around at what is available and the ones I found are either too big, too expensive or just plain don't look right. I decided to build my own bulkhead flat. After looking at some pictures I found on the internet using Google, I settled on this one for inspiration:

I found these on a site dedicated to modeling the SP ( modeling the SP

I started with a Flat of uncertain heritage, a K-line by Lionel flat I think. added the bulkheads using strip styrene, NBW castings, some wire for the ladders and grab iron.

The paint I used is unusual in that I created a freight car Red by mixing cheap Craft paints. The paints I used a shown below.

2 parts Brandy Wine to 1 part Brown iron oxide. Before spraying the model a primed it with Rust-oleum Plastic Primer, as I believe this helped the paint adhere nicely to the model and styrene additions...

I masked off the deck and brush coated some thinned Craft store grays over the deck to give the illusion of wear.

After this dried a sprayed the sides with Testors Gloss Cote, so the decals could gone on without problems. I luckily had some old Walthers SP decals I used for the road name and the data was from a Walthers generic data sheet. The "ACF" logo was from some Microscale odd's n ends from my decal stash.

I sealed the decals with a light coat of Krylon Flat...

Weathering was done by lightly spraying washes of Rust and mud again using cheap craft paint. Here is the result...IMG_0443IMG_0444IMG_0445IMG_0446
