I picked up this beat up AF 310 loco and has these two brass buttons between the wheels and was wondering what the purpose was? Are they power pickups or for some kind of activation? Thanks for any info.

A bit of searching one explanation I saw was:
The brass buttons are from chassis that were designated for O gauge before 1946 and refitted to for S gauge engines and were found on 300, 312, some diecast 302's and 301's the hole is present on some 322's and few had buttons. and a few other model engines had them. Most royal blues had them.
Another user said they were from a track trip section that was never produced.
Either explanation could have some level of truth to it.
Thanks for the reply.
The brass buttons on 1946 S gauge engines work with a track trip for activating accessories. Pre-production versions of the track trip exist but they were never put into full production. It was given number 695 and is shown and described in the 1946 and 1947 catalogs. The catalogs are online at myflyertrains.net.
