Just wondering if the engine has any defects or flaws that I should be aware of before buying it. I'm thinking of the 5244. Technically a shortline steam engine for the Union Transportation. Might make a custom UT caboose.

...based on a historic locomotive, the very operating steam locomotive for the Pennsy. Post pictures if you take the plunge.
Tom
PS- UT seemed to use Pennsy cabin cars in their operations.

I have not seen one come back at Charles Ro for me to look at. I have one and have nothing but good words for it.
I have two. Fantastic engines. Just watch out for the tether connector that plugs into the engine. It can separate if pulled on too hard.
Nothing but good things from me. If you like smoke this one will fill a room.
Mike
I found a train store in Newark Delaware that sells it for a decent price of $609. I'll probably settle for that.

I can attest to that...
Great little engine!

My problem is that I need an engine that can smoke well. See I've bought trains from trainworld or trainz.com and the problem is that they don't smoke at all... My CNJ F3 and PRR GP35 run fine but won't smoke.. I just need to find a B6sb that smokes well. I'll post a video when I purchase one.
I have the B6sb, nice little locomotive. I've heard of occasional issues with the tether, but I haven't had any issues with mine. I only have 10-12 actual running hours on it, but it's performed 100%.
Our's performs well. No issues and smokes very well!
John, first time I heard of tether issue. If anyone is thinking of buying one and can find one, they should pull the trigger. How many people held of on the Milwaukee S-3. Get it while it is still available.
Marty, a couple of people posted here when they first came out. I haven't experienced it myself, just passing on what was posted.
Raritan,
There is one on the Buy/Trade Forum.........great price, jump now.

I see no B6sb models in that listing.
Never mind, I see he added it farther down in the thread.
I have the Long Island version, and love the thing to death. Got lots of hours on it, main line and switching operations. Yes, it can really smoke up the joint on high. I usually turn it to low and leave my others on high to get them all producing about the same smoke. As for the tether, yes, I have had some issues. First was the connector housing came apart, so I super glued it back together. 2nd was it keep dropping sound, and finally figured out that the tether was backing out of the locomotive. Now I run on O36, so it may not be an issue on O72. Also, on O36 S curves the tender was coming off of the track and derailing. Traced both the derail and disconnecting due to the tether binding in the tender. After fiddling with it I learned that the tether is plenty long enough, so I just pulled more out and made a loop like my MTH PS-1 locomotives have. Sure that loop doesn't look anywhere as nice as the straight cord, but since adding it the little locomotive has been flawless in operation.
I really wish Lionel would do a Legacy 0-6-0 dockside on the B6's chassis, I'd buy one in a heart beat. Or another little tendered switcher, like the 0-4-0. These little scale locomotives are fun to operate.

The last thing I want to do is buy an engine with a defect from eBay or something. Anyone know of train stores where I could order it from? I doubt any have the 5244 in stock anymore.
Raritan,
Buying on the Forum is a trusted source for trains, wise up!
Here is a video of my B6:

No one is selling 5244 as far as I'm aware of.

Raritan,
You can try Nicholas Smith if you want to buy from a Hobby Shop:

Normal smoke unit issues. Also I heard of a problem with the lights too

Hhmm, this is the first smoke unit issue I'm hearing about with this engine. Doesn't mean it's not happening but when an engine makes as big a splash as this one did on the forum we usually hear about it in spades. I hope they have been resolved.

A great price.

Both, Lionel, and K-Line had done the B6. Which molds and power assembly were used for this model??
The K-Line B6
If the K-Line B6 is anything like my A5, then it is a great little engine!
The PRR B6 was also offered in brass by Williams or Weaver, as I recall, but I forget which of the two did so. Doesn't matter, as all Mid-Generation Wvr and Wms brass was made by Samhongsa to a high quality level.
So - put an ERR cruise commander/RS kit in...a third option. The gearing is probably better than the L or K versions.
Hard to beat the performance of the Legacy B6, it has great low speed performance.
Mark Boyce posted:If the K-Line B6 is anything like my A5, then it is a great little engine!
Both K-Line engines are great engines. Both of mine, B6 and A5, have a Cruise M and run fine at low speeds. Never had an issue with the Tether. I am surprised the Lionel tether is failing.
Pete
My B6 will run all day long at speed step 1 without any hesitation. No issues with the tether. Legacy is the way to go for a B6 I have a K-line by Lionel A5 and there is no comparison. The A5 is still a nice engine but not at the same level as the Legacy B6.

I have the 5244 and it is perfect!!! No problems at all. I bought mine at Toms Trains in Ardsley, NY. If I recall he still has one there. Great engine...
I believe we have three left in stock and have them sale priced at $587.96 each with free shipping.
