CAB-1 (not 1L) throttle replacement

Has anyone successfully replaced the throttle on the CAB-1 remote control with a rotary encoder that has detents? The lack of detents is maddening at times and I've thought about tearing into one and finding a replacement on Mouser or Digikey.
