I finally hooked up my CAB 1 and PM 1.  I want conventional operation using a hand held.  Actually it is more for my grandson.

I am using a PW KW transformer.  When hooked up the green light on the PM1 comes on.  When I go to use the CAB 1 the red light does not come on.  I have tried all the suggestions in the manual.  I tried both program  mode and run mode, Command and conventional positions.  I do not get power to the track.  I put in new batteries .  When that did not work I checked each battery and got the full 1.5 volts from each.  I tried adding the base unit.  No change.  For a short time  I had basically pass through control.  I got track power that responded to the KW.  I checked the crystals and they were in place.  Reassembled everything and no longer get pass through track power.   Is there a way I can tell if my problem is the CAB1 or the PM 1.

Thanks

Since you are not getting power to the track, I suggest that you begin by checking all of your connections. Be sure that the Powermaster plug is tight and that conv/cmd slide switch is at conv. On your KW, be sure that the in-line fused line of the cable wire is connected to one of your "hot" or power sides of the KW and that the unfused wire is connected to Common or ground.  Connect your Powermaster A terminal to clip 1 on lockon  and U terminal to clip 2.  If all is in order, you should have a green light on the PM .  Next, set PM to pgm and press TR 1 on CAB 1 ,  then press set button on CAB 1. Slide pgm lever to run. That should do it.  So, when you run your trains, press TR1 and Boost on your CAB 1 as you turn the red knob and raise track voltage.   Set your voltage on the KW at sixteen or eighteen and you will not have to touch the transformer at all, since when you press TR and Eng, you will be able to control horn/whistle, speed and direction from the handheld.  Good Luck.

I have a question relating to this sting:

I have a conventional Lionel TW transformer powering a post-war Lionel train set running on an 0-31 tubular track layout .   When I set this up, I was told that for optimum performance, it is best to add power distribution, which I did - in all I have 6 different lock-ons that provide power around my layout (layout 10' x 15')   This has worked very well for my post-war conventional transformer/locomotive train set.

I have now just acquired a Lionel TrainMaster Command Control Set with a TMCC locomotive set.   For power, I also acquired a Lionel TrainMaster and a Lionel 180W PowerHouse (I will no longer use my TW transformer).  I intend to hook up my TMCC/TrainMaster/PowerHouse to my existing 0-31 tubular track layout.

My question:   Should I hook up the PowerHouse to my existing power distribution set up?? Will this continue to provide optimum performance, or will I even need it with the 180W PowerHouse??

Thanks in advance for any and all input ---

I have used the D-U posts for the PM-1 for over two decades with no ill effect. Doing this eliminates any issues with the KW throttles, rollers, direction buttons, and whistle controls in operating the trains.

This then frees up A-U & B-U to be used for adjustable accessory controls(especially for 022 switches), as there is only the 6v & 20v fixed voltages available otherwise.
