Hello all,

I recently bought the #990 Legacy unit. I've noticed that when I start moving the velocity throttle clockwise (speed increase), at certain points (roughly 1/4 marks in the speed graph) the speed will begin to decrease even though i'm moving the dial clockwise. I don't think this is normal (i.e.: back to Lionel it goes), but I wanted to make sure there wasn't a simple fix for this. The Legacy version is 1.52.

Thanks!

Thanks guys, I'll be sending lionel CS an email, although I'll probably wait until after Christmas to send this back to them if that's the case. Right now it's more of an annoyance, and i'd like to be able to use it for the Christmas layout. I don't see Lionel being able to receive, fix, and ship back to me prior to the 23rd- although I could be wrong, I've never RMAed anything from Lionel.

Mine went back for a problem like you describe.  I noticed it before I even had a legacy engine to operate.  I was loking at my ZW-L gauges and could see the power go from where it was to zero and then start to climb again then back to zero.  I could work around it and eventually get it to full power if I wanted.  Since I did not have an engine yet, I got an RMA from lionel and shipped it back.  I think it took about 3 weeks door to door.  The problem is gone now.  The paperwork stated that they replaced a sensor for the velocity comtrol.  It should definitely go back.

I only have one legacy engine, but this sounds like a great excuse to buy another one..although my significant other might question my financial discipline if I do that (especially considering we are saving for a house). I talked to Lionel and received an RA number, so it will be going back to them. I bought from Pat's trains, and had a great experience with him- but i'll let Lionel take care of this one.

It appears it's not isolated to the engine, because even scrolling through menus it will start going in the reverse direction even though i'm rotating clockwise.

I had the same issue with my brand new Legacy 990 velocity dial. It worked for a few hours then failed. Dialing it to gain speed did the reverse: it slowed the engine down. Ultimately, it didn't work at all.

I spoke with Lionel (great telephone service by the way). They diagnosed the problem as being a defective velocity dial. They issued a return authorization number and off it went. It took just under 4 weeks to get it back -- well ahead of the delivery of my Legacy 10th anniversary BTO scale Polar Express! There was no charge for the repair since my Legacy 990 system was brand new.

It's been working fine ever since Lionel fixed it. I am sure Lionel will repairs your as well.

CAB-2 has been fixed. Lionel received it 1/12 and had it shipped back to me on the 1/20- I thought that was very quick for a RA. Tech notes state the velocity dial was adjusted, when testing the unit it definitely feels a little "tighter" or "harder" to turn than before. The odd thing about the tech notes was that apparently the reset button fell out? Tech notes claim this happens when you remove the shell of the product, and that typically voids the warranty, but they still took care of it. The odd thing is that I never took anything apart, so I'm not sure what that is all about, but a little concerning that someone could have been screwed. But, overall a great experience and am glad that Lionel took care of me.

I'm glad I checked this post. Mine had been doing this and I thought I was just a bit jerky with the wheel.
