Last year we bought a large van and it has been "under-conversion" since then.  I was hoping to use it for an overnight (or two) at York this time around.  I spoke to the person in charge of camping and got some good info, but forgot to ask a few questions.  Hoping the some here may provide some insights!

Electricity - my van is set up for AC so it's good that it is provided at York.  Do I need any adapters?  I have a long 120 volt grounded extension cord (standard 3 prong).  Do the spaces provided have regular outlets or do I need to adapt to a 30A RV type receptacle?  Only need 120V 15A hookup.

Coming and going - any problems with leaving your space, heading out for dinner on Thursday and Friday nite then returning to the spot?  No additional car so we will use the van to head out and return.

Anything else - I should be aware of?  This is pretty much a test run of the van (as a camper).  We've taken it to York before but this time it may be a different experience.  Looking forward to it!

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!

I believe that all you need is a regular electric plug to get the electric. As for leaving the spot, I would imagine that you'd want to leave something to protect your spot. You will get a piece of paper to put in your window that shows that you have a spot, but it doesn't guarantee what spot.

I never had to worry about losing my spot in April, as the tent kept it for me! (though the wind tried to blow it down the first few days)

Michael,

I followed your exploits with a tent on the forum.  Lots of good info there!  Are you going again this time?

Bob,

Near Lancaster where we will be hotelling-it for a few nites before York, there is an RV store I plan to visit.  I was hoping to get an adapter there, just in case.  We'll see how that goes - thank for the offer!  I'm guessing the adapter I would need (if I do need one) is the 120V 30A to 120V 15A adapter.

I've taken our motor home, otherwise know as the "OGR Mobile Raw Nerve Center" to York many times. Most of the sites provide 30-amp RV-style electric. I think some of the sites around the track may have 50-amp service. If you're set up to use 110 volt, 15-amp household circuit, you'll need the 30-to-15 amp adapter shown in the post above this one.

Getting in and out is no problem. The sites are open enough to provide plenty of maneuvering room to get out and back in later. The spaces are assigned, so if you leave, you won't lose your spot. Dave Goodheart will see to that!

.  All RV's have access to water and 30 Amp service. There is a dump station and a limited number of full hook-up sites.  Suggest you have an adapter, as pictured.  Sites are on a first come/first served basis.  Your site should be secure, as long as you don't leave during open Meet hours.  Upon arriving at the fairgrounds, there will be signage directing you to the check-in site.  Any additional questions, RV Chairman contact information is in the Meet Notice.

Thanks guys, fo all the info.  I got my adapter(s) at Walmart yesterday - ready for the trip.  Staying in Lancaster a few days then York on Thursday am.

Not quite tent camping any more...my van has been to York before (last 2), but now it has  beds, curtains, TV, etc.

Another question..

Does the $40 rv fee include electrical connection, or is it an additional $40 for electricity?  Tough to tell from the meet notice...

I think it's included but not sure.  Problem is that they say all RVs have ACCESS to water and electricity.  Free (included in the $40 fee) ACCESS?  I think Andy is right, just looking for confirmation.

Bill, I think your "maybe", may be right!

I have an aux battery for the van, but probably won't last 2 nites!  If electricity is included, that may allow us to extend York a second night!  That would be a good thing!... a very good thing!.... not to mention another $40 in the train account!

Larry,

We've looked at RVs for a long time, but the use/cost/gas ratio doesn't work for us.

We went to Hershey a few weeks ago. They had an Outlaw 38RE that I really liked.

King size bed, bath and a half, sleeps 8, rear deck with a separate outdoor kitchen and 50" TV (to complement the 50" and 40" inside!)  Cost=$200K, gas 7MPG.

I see my van as a casual overnighter.  Building it from a cargo van up... One year so far, probably another year to get close to finishing the interior.  It's front wheel drive, 20' long, 6'4" inside, and gets about 20MPG out of the Mopar 6 cylinder engine.

I figured that the $80 was possible if they charged everyone for the full duration of 3 1/2 days, but I prefer the $40 deal!

Thanks,

Ed

You are much better off with the rig you currently have. It's perfect for short camps IMHO.

Now days with large rigs unless your check book is unlimited,  I think your better off just biting the bullet and get a nice hotel room with all the whistles and bells.

Especially for a short 3 to 5 day visit or so.

Oh well, camping any kind of way was so much fun.
