I would like to run my older Alco C-420 Lionel TMCC engine with my Lionmaster SD90 which has odyssey speed control. Do I need to turn the odyssey off on the SD90 to make them run well together in a MU?

Jay, you will have to turn Odyssey off. Odyssey will move with the first step but Tmcc may take 5 or more steps to move.

Even two TMCC equipped engines, both with Odyssey, will rarely run that well together. Legacy seems to have gotten that working, I've had a steamer and a couple of diesels MU'ed and they ran flawlessly. Looked kinda' funny, but they run well. 
I have had the best luck mating two engines of the same type, for example two of the tmcc tunnel motors.

Jay, if you want to see how close they will together just put them on the same track close to each other. Like John said its not easy to get two different engines to run at the same speed even if they are both Odyssey or both without cruise. I have had good luck running two of the same type of engines to run together in Odyssey mode. In this case Lionel F3s.
This is one area where DCS excels.
